Is this a good secondary drive for applications / movies etc? Or should I get an internal 1tb Sata drive for around $65?

In the computer world..I go by the motto "get the best you can afford" ..In this your case, get the biggest you can afford.

I have several of these and all have been working great for some time now. One oddity though. I saw huge performance improvements for daily tasks using this drive on XP and Win7. However, when I cloned a recent Win8 machine I saw only very slight improvements in boot time and common tasks. Almost too little to be worth it. So my limited experience and conclusion is: Great for Win7 or before. Maybe not for Win8.

Well, that's the motto you go by, but don't misunderstand mine. I did not tell him "get the best you can BUY" and to run out and get the best that money can buy. "Get the best you can AFFORD" means get what is within your budget, what you can afford. He was asking should he spend $50 on this 500GB drive or $65 and get a 1TB for his second drive for storage. So basically, he has $65 to work with, and he's in the market for a big storage drive, and as of now he has a choice between a 500GB and a 1TB, therefore he can afford a 1TB. I can tell him add another $30 and get a 2TB or another $60 and get a 3TB, but I didn't. Likewise, I can tell him to forget the 500GB or the 1TB, and a get 250GB instead and pocket the rest for gas or soda.

I totally understand your i7 for email and 3TB for school work argument, but that's not the advice I was giving him. As for your "cheaper in 6-12 months", again, you're absolutely right. Why pay $60 for a 64GB SSD now when you can wait 6-12 months and get a 256GB for that much?
