I don't own this laptop so the following is just me trying to figure things out from the specs page.

Pros:
You save $300 (Update - now you save $200)
GT 660M 2GB GDDR5 is enough for modern gaming with 1080p screen
1920 x 1080 on 17.3 inch laptop
Plays Blu-ray
Backlit keyboard (All G75VW have backlit keyboards.)

Cons:
People have been reporting about a G75 freeze issue and it seems like installing new drivers would fix the problem.
500 GB 5400 rpm is just bad so you might want to replace it with your own ssd or whatever drives you have.

Unknowns:
Picture shows a 3D mode button so does it have 3D?
I think it has 4 USB 3.0 ports but I haven't confirmed it. (Confirmed)

Is this a good deal? Why was this -1? This is the best I've seen so far.. as far as a desktop replacement goes.

How is the quality of ASUS laptops?

Their motherboards are supposed to be the best, I think.

I'm replying your post with an ASUS laptop. The build quality is nice. Sturdy and doesn't break easily. I'm speaking for general ASUS laptops here; the rest of the laptop depends on the product itself. People usually have a problem with ASUS keyboards being too flimsy and not to their liking but I think that's a personal preference. I haven't bought any ASUS gaming laptops yet so I can't really say for sure.

I like this laptop but im not sold on it. Also, the similar deal you linked is expired.

The original MS store deal sold out within hours of the OP of that thread, and they've been out of stock ever since. Strangely enough, they just restocked like you mentioned, and I ordered one myself. I think it's a really good deal given the ASUS build quality. The MSI GE70 that's often compared to it (due to price) has much poorer quality.

To me, the MS store deal and this one are quite comparable. For $200 more, you get the slightly faster CPU, more RAM, and Blu-ray, but also Windows 8, which is arguably not as good as Windows 7.

I never watch Blu-ray on my laptop, so that's not a factor for me. And 8GB of RAM is enough for most everything outside of video and audio processing, which I don't do. I plan on getting an SSD anyway, so the 1TB @ 5400RPM HDD is actually better than the 500GB 7200RPM HDD. I'd gladly trade 100MHz on the CPU for Windows 7, so even if they two were the same price, I'd likely get the MS store deal myself.

And all of that is on top of how accessible this deal is due to Black Friday.

EDIT: My post above was comparing the two deals as they are now, so if you are able to get this for $999, then it's really a wash. A lot of people don't have to pay tax from Tiger Direct, either, so in that case this deal is actually cheaper. But as I mentioned, both this and the MS store deal are very good IMO.

Yes, I do plan on getting an SSD. The G75 has 2 bays, and I believe the MS store uses one 1TB HDD, so the other one should be empty. But if not, I guess I can live with 256GB SSD + 500GB HDD also.
