Not the backup plus, but still a great deal!

The hard drive enclosed in the other one is the Seagate Barracuda ST3000DL001 [newegg.com] Hard drive while this one has a Seagate ST3000DM001 [newegg.com]. It also doesn't have the backup software the other one had. However, if you don't care about that, this one is a better deal in my opinion. Both are 7200 RPM

Update: Other drive had a 2 year warranty while this one has a 1 year.

I followed your steps and took mine apart. Once the top shell is taken off, there are a couple metal clips along the outside of the metal housing near the ports. These can be spread slightly apart so you can more carefully pull the drive out if needed (just don't bend the ports/circuit board). I took some pics with my phone for a little bit of perspective:

My manufacture date is 09/2012. Want to know the best part? I used SeaTools to test the drive beforehand and it all came out fine, after about 12 hours :/. I used the warranty checker (link in the SeaTools app) on seagate.com to check the drives warranty - i believe it was January 2013. This is no surprise (it should be a year) however, the internal drive had a warranty out to 25-Dec-2015 LMAO. I should have never bought that squaretrade 2 year warranty Big Grin.

edit: I can also confirm again that the model is ST3000DM001 and no, the enclosure wasn't soldered to the drive shake head.
So, pull the drive out and the bare drive has a warranty until 2015? Good dealBig Grin
They usually treat the warranty as an external drive only.

Some people complained about the ST3000DM001 and head parking problems. If you guys have a noisy drive, let us know. Also, the new firmware is supposed to fix the parking issue, BUT if you have an older firmware, supposedly you can't flash it to the newer firmware.

So, if you know the firmware, let us now.

Thanks

I saw that warranty and i was like: EEK!> Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin. Everyone should check their internal drive warranty if they take it apart, well worth it laugh out loud.

I tried to update the firmware but it was the latest according to seagate. I don't hear any sound from the harddrive except normal hum.

I read in a couple of places that seagate does not allow user firmware updates on that drive. Do you know what firmware is on it?

EDIT: Hang on, some guys are reporting that firmware updates are allowed.
Thanks

Firmware CC4H is the latest

I'm reading up on this.Looks like there might be different firmware for different series of the same drive. The update package has all possible updates, and if your drive is a candidate for update, then it updates. That's my understanding at this point, and I could be all wrong about it.

Mine is still in the box. The only question I had was this head parking issue, and rather or not it's still an issue.

It's very interesting that the bare drive inside has a longer warranty than the external as a whole. That's good news for those of us who want to remove it.

Thanks for bring it up because I bought a bunch of these and never figured out that the 'chirping' sound is actually the head parking. I have 4xdrives running these FW versions:

CC82
CC9E
CC9E
CC99

Unfortunately, since I have them in RAID5, I cannot confirm which version has/don't have the problem. I heard there is a HDPARM solution but also heard the opposite.

Please keep this thread alive as each 'chirp' is a cry that the hard drive is dying a little bit.

I failed the long test but passed the short one. Should I do the long one again but this time use the fix errors tool?

TIA for anyone that can give me some insight into this.
