Well, I guess first, if your laptop has an optical output, the easy answer is yes. Of course I don't know what you have, but I'm going to guess that your laptop doesn't have the right output to feed the sound directly to the sound bar. So then the question becomes how and why you feed sound from your laptop to external speakers. Yeah, I know the short answer is to hear better. But if you hook your laptop up to your TV via HDMI cable, will the sound come out of the TV speakers? My girlfriend's parents used to have an older HDTV that would only show video from the laptop. If that's your problem, then I don't think this soundbar would work for you because this sound bar does not take any HDMI inputs. If you just feed the sound through external speakers because they sound better than the TV, but you can actually run the sound through the TV speakers with an HDMI cable from your laptop, then you should be in business. The sound will then be fed from the TV to this sound bar with the optical cable and you're good to go. |

I think I will try getting the sound from the tv then and if I can get that to work then I can perhaps start looking for a soundbar for even better sound. Thanks! |

But, what I'm saying, is that I believe you should be able to get a sound bar that you plug your laptop into directly via HDMI and then connect the sound bar and TV via a second HDMI cable. Laptop ---HDMI-------> Sound bar input Sound bar output -----HDMI--------> TV input So you'd need two HDMI cables, but only one output on the TV. Like I said, I'm a little out of my element here -- but I'd imagine this is perfectly possible. However, as I mentioned earlier, it's also probable that you can just continue to plug your laptop into the TV and the TV into the sound bar and you're golden. If someone else wants to chime in, that's be great as I use a receiver and speakers, so I'm not terribly knowledgeable about the sound bar options that exist. |

The only time it would make sense for a sound bar to have HDMI, is if it had two hdmi inputs and one output. the inputs would come from PS3, laptop, etc, and the output would go to the TV. There is no popular system (console, laptop) that has two hdmi inputs to allow for one to go to the tv and another to go to the sound bar. Also, I would be concerned about the quality of the image for a soundbar that has hdmi in/out. This sound bar, having two optical inputs is perfect for me personally, since I can connect the ps3 straight to it with optical for maximum quality and hdmi for the tv. and I can have the tv optical connect to the sound bar for other uses such as TV shows and when connecting the laptop.
