iPad 1 will not connect to laptop/charger/etc
I bought an iPad 1 refurbished a few months back and recently it suddenly stopped charging. If I connect a cable to it through the laptop or the wall charger it will not even register that anything is plugged in. No beep, no "not charging" no lightning bolt, nothing.I've used multiple outlets, multiple charging cables, multiple docks, and nothing works. I lent it to a friend who took it home with her, and she tried charging it in her car, and in her various outlets and docks/cables, and still nothing. I am thinking the only thing possible is that the actual connector on the ipad where you plug in the charging cable must be defective or something. Every now and then if I connect it to the wall charger cable it'll beep and say "not charging" but other than that, nothing. This means I can't sync it with iTunes or load anything up onto the device. Dropbox is the only way I can load ebooks or comics on there. If my iPad were to crash or something I'd be screwed because if I restore it, I can't sync it with my computer. I have restored it a handful of times trying to get it to somehow work (before I figured it was the connector, and not a hardware issue), but to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions, or am I basically SOL? This is an iPad 1 wifi version with 64MB. iOS 5 Thanks! |

maybe its the battery.

![]() Also it's the strangest thing but if I shut the iPad down, completely while plugged in, it'll slowly charge itself back up. So it was at like 5% or something, right? I held the black button at the top until the red bar showed up saying "shut down completely" or whatever, and then once it was down, just left it alone. Then when I woke up and checked it, it was 90% or 100%. But if it's on while charging, nothing. |

I'm no iPad expert, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I would think that the connector is OK, as it does charge when the iPad is turned off. When I experimented with tablet battery life, I would watch the charging rates, which were affected by how much power the unit was taking. Let's say the charger was capable of 10 watts and the unit was consuming 6, then it would only charge at a rate of 4. If I plugged it into a computer that only produced 4 watts, then the battery would go down at the rate of 2 watts, if you know what I mean. Anyhow, the point is that when you turn it completely off, it charges but takes a long time to do so and when it's on or on standby, it does not charge at all, correct? That would insinuate to me that only a small amount of power is being given to the battery, relative to what you actually input, and the only way that could happen, IMO, is if the charger is damaged/defective. If that is the case, then Apple will know about it and if you bring it to an Apple store to have it looked at, they will probably already know what the problem is exactly and be able to tell you what it would cost to fix. |

Like Rocky is insinuating, try a higher powered charger. The iPad needs more power than the iphone to charge, so it simply won't charge off of a USB port - not enough power.
You may just need a good ipad charger(~10w) - this article explains it pretty well: http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/ar...r_adapters You might also try a complete facroty restore on it - I've seen bad software causing problems, too. |

Plus at one point it would charge, and then it just one day stopped. It did it before but it began charging again a few days later. However it's now been a month or so and it's still not charging. I did an "erase all settings and restore" from the iPad last night in preparation for selling it on Craigslist or Ebay, and it still won't charge or even recognize a cable. |

When I said charger, I was talking about the internal charger, not the device that we plug our tablets into and often refer to as chargers. |

That's the thing though, it's not drawing ANY. It will not recognize/acknowledge/do anything when you connect a cable to it, no matter what it is connected to. I've tried it with official cables and chargers, and it doesn't do anything. If you attached a cable to your ipad but the other end of the cable wasn't connected to anything, that's what my ipad would do when you plug it into the wall with the charger or to the laptop. It just acts as if nothing is plugged into it. No beeps, no lightning bolt, no nothing.
AT this point I'm just going to see how much I can get for it on Ebay. I'm sure someone can fix it and it's easy but I just have no time or patience or knowledge on how to do it. |
