- Runs a mature port [rockbox.org] of Rockbox [rockbox.org].
- Can read SDXC as long as you reformat the card to FAT32 from exFAT. Now, Windows won't do this for you, but any number of free tools will. Here's the one I use. [partitionwizard.com] Linux users can just use Gparted or their partition tool of choice, and Disk Utility on OSX should work just fine as well.
- See here for a long technical review [blogspot.com], which compares it favorably to the much more expensive iPod touch 3G (yeah it's a bit outdated). Max output is solid. The official firmware at the time had a slightly speed up of audio. By now I'm sure this has been fixed but in any case, it was fixed in Rockbox long ago.
- Doesn't need any kind of media manager-type software; functions as mass storage. But, the database needs to be rebuilt after each write to the player. This can be avoided by using Dropbox, [sic Rockbox] which doesn't use a tag-based db unless you tell it to. See here for more.
- Dedicated mp3 players may seem like relics, but can be useful in a pinch.

Nice. Really enjoy my Clip+. Anyone interested in upgrading it to the MP3 player firmware equivalent of DD-WRT for routers might want to check out Rockbox. Really opens up the player's capabilities.

do diffrent class microSD cards affect the battery life? I have a 16gb class 10 in my current blue one and the battery only lasts 6 hours when playing flac files.
was gonna pick up this red one hoping it had a better battery life. |
