Crucial V4 256GB 2.5" SATA II SSD - $144.99 + FS

so any pc gurus on? what's the verdict on this? good deal or not?

With the M4 (and Samsung 840) routinely going on sale for about $165, i'd hold out for those.

I saw this earlier today and did some research on it. Reviews are not that good and benchmarks I found seem to back that up. Basically, the drive is SLOW!!! This is the much cheaper version of their M4 series which is much better. Even the OCZ Agility is much better than this drive and blows it out of the water in performance. Whether you'd trust the quality of the OCZ drive though is your decision.

Yeah this drive's controller is super budget, It's better to get a sandforce on sale for $10 more

Like the poster above me said, the speed of this one is 3gb/s versus the better 6gb/s models. Check to see which speed your motherboard supports. If it supports 6gb/s then hold out for a faster drive.

Good advice. I'll add you may still see the Samsung 830 for ~$165, and it has a great track record - results won't be in on the 840 for a while.

I have a Macbook 2009 unibody and I believe that the interface speed is 3GB/s. So may be I should consider it - I have been holding out for one of these for almost 5-6 months.

Below $150 would be a good price. But then I wonder if I should not rather get the 5 year warranty drive that OCZ sells - and which currently sells for $199 on amazon. May be I should wait for that to fall in price. Then at least I know that my laptop is good for another 3-4 years - i.e. the SSD will last.

Thoughts?

If your max speed is 3gb/s anyway then you should consider this drive. I don't have any first hand experience but have seen favorable reviews on the Crucial drives. The reviews for the OCZ drives have been awful.

You *may* find a better deal on black friday or cyber monday, but who knows if you'll have to go wait in line somewhere or stalk a website in order to get it.

This is a horrible SSD. It is NOT the same as their M4 line.

The controller in this SSD is incredibly slow. Save your $ and get something else.

Sorry, this is bogus response all around: 1. Even for Sata-II laptops, the performance of the better drives is still improved. Bandwidth isn't everything! 2. Reviews for *some* OCZ drives are bad. Some are great. The Vertex 3, Agility 4, and Vertex 4 are all top notch. 3. You would really stand in line for an SSD? You're kidding, right? We're seeing this price pretty regularly now on much better SSDs. Thanks to the OP for taking time, but total TD on the deal.
