If you were to go through insurance, I would tell them that a shopping cart did the damage (you don't know for sure that it didn't) that way it will be filed as a comprehensive claim, which would not increase your premiums. If it is filed as a collision claim, your premiums could go up (not likely if you haven't had another claim within 5 years).

kind of had a similar issue with my wife's car about a year ago. In WM parking lot, guy was backing up, dented front quarter panel. While he was "working with his insurance", I took out the wheel well panel and pushed the dent out by hand. You can "kind of" tell that something happened there, but it's not bad at all (note it is metal). Later when he got his insurance involved the had my wife take it to a dent place, which wanted like $600 to fix the panel (they wanted to put an entire new panel in). We said no and kept the check for $600
