Is that the Seagate Expansion external drive? I believe it has a 5400 RPM drive and all the Target stores in my area are OOS. I think it is a great deal for an external storage and I would get it if I can find one at that price.

Hmmm. Buying Caviar (WD) or what you see in your toilet after you eat and digest caviar (Seagate) doesn't seem like much of a comparison to me.

The Seagate CoD junk drive is also external, while this is one of the very best laptop drives available. While this WD is busy performing tasks in your computer years from now, that Seagate in its enclosure will make a great doorstop.

I guess you never realized that drives can be removed from their enclosures. They aren't grafted on permanently. I think the only maker that makes it hard to take them out and use them is WD. WD uses a proprietary connector on their external drives to mess things up for people.

I've bought a ton of drives in my day. Only once or twice have I bought them bare. It's always cheaper to buy them as external drives and then rip the drive out.

What are you talking about. There is no proprietary connector. I can take either of my 2 WD external drives and put them in my laptop if I want.

not too long ago the best that I could do was 500 GB for 75 so this is a good deal on a good drive.

Which is better for a laptop: this or the Seagate XT 500GB hybrid SSD/HDD?

While you're correct that WD uses a proprietary connection, you obviously fail to realize that removing one of Seagate's craptacular drives from its enclosure doesn't magically make it a good drive that doesn't suffer the notorious Seagate CoD. Seagate could put its drives in diamond-encrusted unobtanium shells and they'd still be junk. The enclosure has nothing at all to do with it.

can you please explain? i thought the 2.5 external hard drives had a larger form factor in which you could put it into a laptop 15mm opposed to 12.5 or 9mm?

Then why did you make such a big deal about the Target drive being an external as opposed to this one being internal? You devoted a whole paragraph to it. Take a drive out of an external enclosure and hey what do you have? An internal drive.

That's irrelevant.

WD Blacks are the industry's most reliable consumer hard drive.

I'd rather have a drive that has enough manufacture confidence to have a 5 year warranty, over the considerably worse 1 year warranty that Seagate offers.

Because you originally asked "Why this as opposed to (trash) Seagate?"

That's like asking someone why they're buying a Ford F-150 instead of a Ford Fiesta.

Not everyone wants an external or portable drive. Some need an internal laptop drive. Two totally seperate things altogether. The fact that the Seagate is garbage is clear reason to buy the WD Caviar and put it inside an enclosure if one needs an external drive.
