HP Touchpad only Tablet Player to store locally & play MKV files?
Was thinking about getting an iPad 3 refurbished at these great prices of $379, but after doing some Internet searches found that you can't add a MKV file to the drive then play it while on the go. Sure, you can stream MKVs from your computer over WIFI, but I want to take it with me on my tablet to the gym, oil changes, etc... The only solution is conversion to Mp4 which takes a long time per movie.
Then, I thought that maybe the Nexus 7 might work. So, after further research I also found that forums also recommend conversion to Mp4. VLC is still in beta and crashes often during playback of MKV files.
But, my old HP Touchpad on WebOS still works like a champ playing MKV files using Kalemsoft player.
Pretty much any decent android phone or tablet will do this without trouble. I do it all the time on the Touchpad I had, and the Nexus 7 I have now. Remember that MKV is a container like AVI. The codec that is on the inside is what is important. I have had a few MKV H.264 files that I have had to use the "Software decoding" mode instead of "Hardware decoding" mode.
