Great post, very useful.

There is a 7900gs deal for $100AR. This performs faster than the 8600 series but is not DX10 compatible. DX10 compatibility is useless anyway if the GPU is not fast enough to run all the eye candy:

For 5$ more you can get a FX board. Has x4 USB 3.0 and has x8 SATA 6Gb/s. Seems like its worth the extra few dollars.

It seems that many people in this thread are going with the Phenom II X2 555 of which it seems the latest versions don't unlock 2 additional, STABLE cores.
I'm just wondering why more people don't opt for the Athlon II X4 630 or 635.
It seems that most people's needs would be better served by the 4 cores of the Athlon II rather than the L3 cache of the Phenom II.

In your case here you give up all the speed (in seconds) from the boot time with only one drive to the RAID BIOS load time, the mirroring drive would hold back the velociraptor at write if I remember correctly. You would probably have double the boot time the same configuration with SSDs.

For video card I was considering the Mwave deal http://slickdeals.net/forums/show...?t=2571401 for Radeon HD 6850 $143 after MIR which would leave me with about $300 for the rest. I am open to other video cards and looking for suggestions. PC purpose is general with mid-level gaming.

You should be good with that graphics card for 1080p resolutions not sure how much of a powerful CPU+mb combination can you squeeze in 300 not to mention that you also need to fit a psu and HDD in that amount.

I had hoped to get my hands on a new Sandy B i2500k and Asus P8P67 PRO at the special Microcenter bundle prices. But with in store only (and OOS issues) not to mention price difference, I am back to heavily considering buying a Phenom x4 965 and Giga 870-UD3 for a savings of ~$150+ (TD has the SB bundle for $400 and the egg has the x4 and mobo for $269).

Paired with:
G.Skill 8gb (4x2)
XFX radeon 5850

For some gaming, video encoding here and there, and CS4 use, i can't seem to think that i would be that displeased saving the 150 or so and going AMD/Giga. I don't really want to wait until bulldozer. Thoughts?

I'm preparing to build my first computer and had a few questions. It seems like a lot of people are building computers for gaming machines, but that isn't what I am looking for. I'm looking for something that can:

1) rip/burn movies relatively quickly
2) serve up movies to uPnP media devices
3) be connected to a 50" lcd tv to watch movies off of an external hard drive

I really don't want to buy an OS so I would like to install Ubuntu and use Fuppes or MediaTomb to serve the video to my devices. My main question is what kind of CPU, Mobo, video card, and case will do the job. I'm on a tight budget and don't want to unnecessarily overkill the computer with power where its not needed....I just am not sure how much is needed and where it is needed. I would also like to allow for expandability, so if and when I want to upgrade or add some components, it won't be a problem. I'd really appreciate any advice you all might have.
