I got a cheap Acer i3 for $499 back in Mar'2010. The better clarity of its crystal eye webcam, processing speed and wake up speeds comparable to MBP surprise my wife even now..... her 2012 ultrabook is far slower than my laptop..... I have never used it for much gaming, but heavy browsing/hdmi-out/movies/music etc.... I have always wanted to own a MBP but could not let go of this piece.... So I will vouch for Acer......

My HP Folio 13 with a 128GB SSD and a Core i5 Sandy Bridge CPU does surprisingly well with some light gaming (Portal, Dawn of War, older games, emulators) even though it has no discrete graphics card. Stepping up to Ivy Bridge (and an i5) would certainly be worthwhile if you intended to game on your laptop.

An SSD will not help gaming aside from faster loading times. There's not much you can do with most laptops to improve gaming performance.

Compared to the load times from a 5400 RPM HDD, I'd say that's an improvement of magnitude.
