The Ultrabook Thread

There's a really great thread over here about laptops for sale on BF and CM...but it got a bit frustrating to try to sort through all the huge honking laptops to get to the ultrabook deals. So I thought I'd start a thread dedicated to ultrabooks.

If that's what you're after you're in the right place. woot

NOTE: please DO include non-BF deals in this thread. Most of the BF deals are kinda meh so I'd like to discuss all the options available now.

Thanks for the thread, I'll be watching. I've been trying to follow the other laptop thread but you are right, it's overwhelming. I'm leaning toward the BJs ASUS but it only has a 4-cell battery. I assume the more cells the longer the battery life? I think 14" screen is about a low as I want to go (my eyes as I get older are not that great, lol) and a DVD drive is a must for me. I can't even believe so many laptops don't have one. I'm hoping to get the BJs deal online but I'm happy to find something else similiar before or after BF.

Yep, the BJ's deal sound like it will work for you. 4-cell battery is a bit substandard, but I think it's rated for like 6 hours of use, so unless you do a lot of all-day meetings or traveling you should be ok. It does have an optical drive...honestly I can't think of the last time I popped a CD in my laptop. To each his own though. Smilie

Thanks Short...... Some of my family still lives in the dark ages, some of the little one still like to have music cds to play in there room and I like to sometimes make video dvds to play for the parents. Someday we might be all digital, just not yet! lol.

I think 6 hours will work, I'm just so done with the big heavy laptops, looking forward to something lighter. I'm not looking forward to Window8 but like most things, it's in inevitable I guess.........

I wonder if the Staples deal is a better one. People really like the Twist and turn feature on the tablet. However, the battery life on it isn't the greatest.

Thanks for asking this. With some poking I found that non-members can buy anything but have to pay a 5% surcharge ($29 for the Asus deal). Alternatively you can buy an annual BJ's member ship for $50 and pay no surcharge.

The cheapest I've seen anywhere meeting those specs is ~$1000-1100. I'd like to get it down to $700-800 or so... Any other ideas?

The Twist looks super cool except a bunch of little things make it a nogo for me. No SSD is a big one for me, which might just be vain but oh well. 4GB ram is light but not horrid, but then the basic Intel 4000 graphics, 3.5 lbs (nice for an ultrabook, but not a tablet), then the fact that it's $100-200 more than other comparable machines. Battery actually doesn't look like an issue for me, they're rating it for 7 hours.

There is a couple scary reviews on Amazon [amazon.com] about flickering screens though?? Overall positive reviews, but I don't like the idea of a swiveling screen that flickers.

Hm there's a deal at the Windows store that can come close:

Not a 3rd gen, but it's an i7, so I think you come out ahead.
