Will this work as an extender (after installing DD-WRT) with a 2WIRE router/modem without DD-WRT?

As long the ddwrt build supports repeating and isn't buggy, yes.

But I can't say it's reliable b/c 2wire routers are garbage. Even with good signal when I hack someone's router and have my router as a client bridge (multiple routers tried) the connection drops easily when any kind of load is put on it.
You'd be better off using this instead of the 2wire crap. Your range would probably double (plus actual stability).

I'd buy 3 of them. One as the main AP, the 2nd as a client bridge and the 3rd as the extended AP (connects to the bridge). Repeating cuts your bandwidth in half, minimum. Add in any inefficiencies of the firmware and it's going to be dog slow.

What's a 2wire router? I need a new router cuz wireless on this old netgear sucks. Been meaning to get on those refurb cisco's but waiting for under $20 lol

I went to dd-wrt website following Path: Downloads > others > eko > BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2 > 2012 > 07-20-12-r19519 > rosewill-rnx-n150rt and dowloaded file rosewill-RNX-N150RT-19519.bin to perform firmware upgrade. Then I got the best 150Mbps Wireless N router I have ever experienced with strong wireless signal and always Full Speed 150Mbps. I have never got full Speed with any Netgear WNR2000 Wireless N 300Mbps, so I'm quite satisfied with this RNX-N150RT router.

How's the range on this device? Brother's router has really bad range, can't get coverage over 20 feet.
