I've had consistent success with the generic toner cartridges, but like most here I have seen reviews from people whose experience was much different. At this price, I'll try one and see how it goes.

As for the drum, I had to change mine a few months back. Instead of buying the whole assembly, I bought the $16 DR360 rebuild "kit" from a reseller on eBay who sells what he claims is a high quality grade drum from Mitsubishi. It took maybe ten minutes to install (and would probably take me half that the next time around) and has worked continuously without a problem.

How do you know when you need a new drum?

EDIT: Apparently it does. This seems incredibly cheap since these cartridges last me forever, and I print a lot of stuff...

So I was pretty much ready to order this if it fit my HL-2270DW even though I already have 2 spares, but it's the wrong model. I then checked the price on the TN-450s and they're $11 shipped prime! Holy crap, I didn't realize this stuff is priced that cheaply normally. I remember when I first got this printer the generic toner was much more.

I purchased a two pack (2 boxes really) from Meritline a couple of months ago for $16.95 w/free shipping for my practice. The box shown looks exactly the same. They are good replacement cartridges and seem to be lasting pretty well.

I've bought these plenty of times and these toners don't last as long. I get around 200-300 pages from these toners

Depends on your machine, but mine said drum nearing end of life for 6 months then it finally started streaking and producing uneven copies. Replaced it with a Meritline one w/cartridge for like $28 if I remember correctly. It has lasted a year plus.

Oh ok, thanks. My prints have been coming out streaky for a while now (like something you'd see coming from a copy machine). It doesn't bother me because I just print shipping labels with the thing. I printed out a status sheet and it says the drum is still at 100% though?? And I've only printed 1900 pages so far. Would the drum die that soon? What happens if I don't replace the drum, will it blow up? lol

I have the Brother HL-2240 btw...first laser printer I've ever owned.

It won't blow up or anything, just the copy quality gets bad. There is a little slider thing on most printers (usually green, on the drum/toner assembly) that you can slide back and forth to clean the corona wires. That might help with the quality. 1900 pages shouldn't be a problem for the drum, most get 10's of thousands of copies before they die. You might find you get better quality out of labels with the manual feed (less curling so less streaks).

Your particular printer gets (1) DR420 Drum Unit (12,000 pages).

Well, the photo of the box 'looks like' a Linkyo box; that is all I can say.

when the printing gets light I take the cartridge out and shake it that seems to help a lot .

Uh, it's much cheaper to use generic cartridges then either a) rebuild your drum or b) buy a new printer when the drum wears out compared to buy OEM cartridges to extend the life of the drum.

I have a 2170W going strong after two years on generic carts. Hell, it works better than the laserjet I have at the office.. wish I could get bookkeeping to switch us to Brothers, it would be a lot cheaper.
