I wouldn't sweat the Samsungs as so far all of the reports of dying/ dead drives had pre-release firmwares on them The ones shipping have a different firmware and Samsung says it fixes the issue seen on the test drives. I took the gamble and bought the 840 (non-pro) for $299 and so far I am loving it. Faster than the Corsair Force 180GB that it replaced and I have 500GB, so plenty of room to spare (I needed it as I usually run 3-4 vmware images at a time to recreate my test labs). It is getting a workout and holding strong. Time ail tell though (that is what backups are for).
I would never doubt the quality of Samsung. Everything they put out is top notch. SSDs, TVs, Blu-Rays, etc. So they already released the new FW already? My understanding was that the Pros were dying and not both. Btw I also got freaked when I heard that Sammy used TLC NAND for their new 840 and although is does have less endurance than a 830, it's nothing to worry about and I wouldn't listen to some of the nonsense here on SD about the 840's TLC NAND.
