Most definitely not. What if you delete a file? How are you going to restore that from your "backup"?
Ahh, I hear ya. I was figuring failure on a drive as opposed to user oppsie like this.

So, to sum it all up, all hard drives from Seagate AND Western Digital are crap, and there are no other manufacturers?

Geez, you'd think this was a conspiracy to get everyone to switch to SSDs. Too bad that's not an option when they still cost more than ten times as much.
Agreed! Still can't compare the 2 with the price being so different. For an OS drive I think everyone should try to get an SSD, but for storage the old disk HD's are what's most cost effective.

You must have done something really bad! What was the reason for cancellation if you bought from eBay? Could it be paypal/credit card has fund issue?
No, just standard "over quantity allowed" email. Payment already submitted and everything.

about the warranty...from Newegg.com chat:
Emma: Hi, my name is Emma. How may I help you?
Me: want to order: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6822148844

if i add the "3-year extended warranty" is that 3 years after the 2 years that comes with the drive from the manufacturer is up? so 5 years total?
Emma: I'd be happy to help you with that. May I please have a moment to look into this for you?

Me: sure
Emma: Thank you very much for waiting, Allen. Please note that the extended warranty begins after the manufacturer warranty ends.
Me: so that would be 5 years total? just want to make sure...the 2 year manufacturer warranty followed by the 3 year extended?
Emma: Yes, that is right.
Me: thank you very much

How are you guys settings yours up when you buy multiple? Running them separately, or in some type of raid setup?
I created a disk pool using Windows 8. Six 3TB drives in my primary PC; backing up to loose hard drives in an eSATA dock and also to three Intel SS4200-E servers.

Read the reviews for this drive vs. the WD Green or WD Red. This has a lower failure rate. wave
This could be true. A lot of the animosity comes from the fact that in the recent past Seagate has made some bad drives. Before that, though, they made the best drives on the market with the longest warranty (5 years). Now they make decent, but underrated drives (mainly because a good portion of the population incorrectly thinks they're garbage).

The same thing's happened with Western Digital, Hitachi (after IBM's "Deathstar" incident, they went on to make top quality 2TB drives), and even Maxtor going further back. The hate is cyclical and just alternates between all the manufacturers every 5 years or so, and taints that manufacturer's offerings well after they've resolved whatever got them the reputation in the first place. It's Seagate's turn, now.

Good info. Also, I returned a DOA to NewEgg over the past year and paid nothing. All it took was a call to complain and get S&H free. NE just seems to setup their returns to make $$ from ppl who don't bother to call. Yes, Amazon makes it easier but I'm not buying this "NewEgg charges for DOA returns and that's that" business ... I've done it. If any other edge NE over Amazon makes a simple call worth it to you, go for it.

Has anyone else had a legit DOA and demanded free return shipping to NE and had them actually refuse it?

True, before shop runner, I would just complain to the customer service, and they gave me free return shipping, and on items I simply no longer wanted, they waved the restocking fee. They always say that was becaused I am a "valuable customer" but I am sure anyone who asks would get it.

Amazed that this 3 TB deal is still live... come on people... this is pre flood price (if memory serves me correctly). The only problem is the shorter 2-yr warranty.

Man is mortal, regardless of Race :: HardDrive will fail, regardless of Manufacturer

I always stick to my budget $80 to $100 and update ever 1/2 years. I paid about $100 for a 420MB Quantum Drive in mid 90s, now got a 3TB for $90 - it's huge price DROP Smilie

There are different kind of backup. You are talking about incremental backup that can restore to whenever "DATE" you want. Even incremental backup, most people only run their incremental backup once or twice a week, so if you delete your file before you backup, doesn't really help.

But most people talk about mirror backup. And RAID-1 is definitely a kind of backup.
So are you saying any automatically real time sync software to another hard drive is not consider a backup?
