Why did they drop the warranty to a year? Are they really having problems with internals- I've got 3 for storage that are almost 100% good on SMART at least 3 years old.

You have to pay shipping back with newegg through right ?

and If you look at the 1star reviews on amazon, a lot are doa, or fail quickly... so if it doesn't play right you can just send it back for no cost, which is not the case at newegg (I think).

I agree - you shouldn't be cheap on hard drives. But things change so quickly, I'm not sure what is a good hard drive. What is the WD Red the other poster wrote about?

Good Deal - Amazon.com is dead as far as I am concerned. They started charging sales tax in PA as of Sat and didn't tell anyone. I found out when I just tried to purchase this item. Stupid business move amazon.

The probability that two drives in a four drive raid setup to mechanically fail at the exact same time is pretty slim to none; I've only witnessed this once in my lifetime thus far in a server setting, but the drives were from the same batch, which does increase the likelihood of failures happening at the same time, but even then, usually if one dies, you'd immediately replace it with a spare before you loose the RAID.

For a consumer device, RAID 5 is more than enough for your level of demand in a home setting. Honestly, you'd be better off (if you are worried about data security) would be to run a RAID 5+1 hot spare so if a drive does fail, it would be immediately activated and be replaced in the RAID. RAID 6 only really becomes necessary if you sport a min of 7 drives.
