In for 1 with my 5 off 25 amazon coupon to go with my Dell XPS 8500 that is coming.

This drive would serve its purpose as a secondary drive in my desktop that id exclusively use to dump my pics and vids taken from my cell, digital camera and old VHS tapes. All my eggs would be in one basket. Would I be playing with fire getting this drive for something like that?

this is a risk you take with any hdd. you should always have at least 1 back up.

This is not true, especially with these larger drives. When a drive fails and you replace it, it has to go through a rebuilding process. During that process, there is an extremely large amount of stress put on the other drives. This greatly increases the chance of failure during that time. I have had 2 disks fail in a 4 drive array twice. They both had double parity, so nothing was lost, but if it was single parity, all of the data would have been gone. With drives this size, using single parity is CRAZY imo.

I think HDs are amazon and NE are both 2 years. Amazon is known for messing up warranty years. I guess the guy put in the data assumes all electronics are 1 year warranty.

Reliability/integrity specs are identical. The only thing the WD Black has going for it is its additional 3 years of warranty coverage -- no, that's not a typo; I ran a warranty check on my new Seagate 3TB and it came back as 2 years, not 1.

I think for HD, better go with Amazon. Easy/Free to return (till 01/30/2013) and they package better than NewEgg. NE is well known how they package HD.

Always Always Always stress test your HD after you receive them, just torture it with any means you can think about BEFORE PUTTING IT IN PRODUCTION USE.

I purchased 4 with discover card which provides extra one year warranty for free.

22% of the reviews on Newegg are 1 egg, the 2 and 3-egg reviews all received one or more DOA drives. So it looks like about 40% of these drives are DOA or fail quickly.

Can't take the chance even though it's a great price.

If you don't have a backup, it is only a matter of time until you lose the entire 3tb.
