i hear ya' I had to deal with that issue myself when I got a Samsung series 7. Extremely nice laptop (i7 / resolutions etc) but the wifi issues were terrible and there were no resolutions and I wasn't about to shell out another $50 to replace the component of a laptop I just bought for $750... so it went right back. It's good that you're doin' the research... would recommend the ThinkPad line over everything else

It would be helpful if you could link to those threads. I searched but haven't found anything yet. It would also be helpful if you could provide a more precise description than "wifi issue".

googling it you find it a issue with some and not an issue with others.....

2nd gen i3 needs to be < 400 for an ultrabook to be considered imo.
i5 is a HUGE upgrade over i3.

considering this has a discrete video card, it's a warm deal. But not super hot.

I have a u410 and the wifi is pretty bad. My network is extremely well tuned with a ASUS RT-N56U, set for N only and the wifi on the U410 which is the same syterm slow and all but dies in the next room.

It isn't easily upgradable. Lenovo has whitelist on bios so you have to hunt and install a hacked bios. With the labor of dealing with bios and opening the case you are going to want to put in a dual band, and antenna placement is another nightmare..

10x eaiser to upgrade a card on samsung. $24 for a dual band N with bluetooth, no bios issues and easier antenna placement.

maybe a typical 2200 (or 2230) but not typical 2200 results.
Sitting on top of router I get a absolute maximum of 3Mbs, I can see that go through enormous peaks and drops during the transfer so I average about 1MB/s. In the next room from router with normal wallboard wall I get between 200 to 400Kbps. That is transferring from my gigabit server. My dell from work gets 40Mbps wireless on the same network

I dont know about the Z. Do yourself a favor and test immediately. If you are not seeing good N speeds I would return it. Whatever you do don't send it to Lenovo for "repair" because you will pass your return for refund period while it is the shop

I know i am asking a lot, but homebound and not sure what to look for "N" speed. If u can tell me how to do it will appreciate it (have fios if that helps)

well with fios you will really notice any problems. I have a 3mbps (=3000kbps) DSL so my U410 can actually max that clsoe to the router. But my U410 transfers from my gigabit server were running at about 1/5 to /20th the speed they should have. If you have fios you would see low speeds, ie stuttering netflix, which should not happen on fios. N should get real life 50mbps, congested, two rooms from the router, 20mbps. Look for that on speedtest.net the day you get your laptop,

Don't worry about it. It's one guy with an incompatibility issue. It's not worth worrying about. There were some issues with an isolated batch of ultrabooks. They already fixed the problem. If you receive one manufactured like... 9 months ago, and the fix hasn't been applied, just call Lenovo and they will either fix it for you or send you a new unit. He's just too lazy to call and deal with it.
