Newbie question: does printer and storage sharing work with openwrt? If yes, please advice how. Appreciate your help and thank you very much for the write-up.

Thanks to chinafbi's tutorial, my router has been running incredibly smooth over the past few days with no reboots. The 5ghz band is insane, feels like every webpage I visit has been cached.

how can you get 5ghz to have internet...mine is only showing up in 2.4ghz and 5ghz is 0%

What do you mean? Did you enable the 5ghz band? It has its own SSID that you have to connect separately from the 2.4ghz.

It has its own SSID for 5ghz. See attached screenshot. It is showing 0%. I tried connecting via 5ghz but had no internet. Does dual band means it will have internet on both the bands.. i am confused.

Yes you would have internet on both bands - connect to each using your separate ssids. Check if you have unique ssid for both. Looks like you have same name before a space? You can also try deleting and setting up this band and if all else fails, reset openwrt and try again.

Okay The router works real good with latest trunk openwrt firmware. Fast, responsive, and stable. Here is my guide on how to install the openwrt firmware and install luci (for graphic user control instead of using commands).

1- Make sure your router is version 1.x (x can be any number).
2- Download the openwrt firmware from here: http://downloads.openwrt.org/snap...actory.bin
3- Download putty command tool from here: http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/put.../putty.exe
4- Login to your router config page (192.168.0.1) using internet explorer browser and update the firmware to openwrt. Use the firmware file you downloaded in step 2.
5- Now open Putty software you downloaded in step 3. Enter host name: 192.168.1.1, Connection Type choose: Telnet. Now click open. Now you will see the command line with black screen,
6- Now type "passwd" into the command line and press enter on the keyboard. Now choose your new password to access the router make sure password has letter and number. Repeat type password and press enter. Password should be changed now.
7- Type into the command "opkg update" and press enter on keyboard, Wait for it to do some download and updates. Once finished, type this "opkg install luci" and press enter
8- Type this into the command to enable luci "/etc/init.d/uhttpd enable" and press enter on keyboard.
9- Type this into the command "/etc/init.d/uhttpd start" and press enter on the keyboard. Now you can close Putty.
10- Open internet explorer in the address bar punch in: 192.168.1.1 and use the password you created to login to the router config page. Go to the wifi section and turn on the wifi and set up wireless security network.

stock firmware had ftp and USB share features. OpenWRT wikipedia entry suggests it has ftp and DLNA features, but i don't see any options in Luci interface.. how do i use these?

I used the procedure above but when I try to telnet to 192.168.1.1u sing putty I get "Connection closed by remote host" please help!!!

thanks... i see steps for Samba, FTP.. but not for miniDLNA. can you provide me tools to install and sequence for below purposes.

1- being able to transfer files between my USB HDD plugged into router and my laptop on wifi
2- to have my DLNA clients (Panasonic DLNA TV, PS3, Google TV Revue etc) find my miniDLNA server, and stream from there..
