my thoughts exactly. but since it came by default, it didnt really hurt to have one. I work only when there's adequate lights in the room/office...so even with back-lit keyboard, there's a slim chance Im ever gonna use it...and thats only when I deliberately go to the basement to do my work. *starts chainsaw

this laptop is too small and too low resolution

Got a refurbished this morning for $612 plus tax. It configured as i7-3520, backlit screen , 4gb ddr3 and 500GB 7200rpm hard drive. Not sure how a refurb goes. Lenovo customer service is really ruining its business.

Where is the IPS screen upgrade for $30? On screen option I only see 2 more options, one with 2x2 and another with 3x3 antenna.

edit: I guess it's the 12.5" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, 2x2 Antenna" option - "Premium" must be the IPS part, and $50 is listed upgrade price but after coupon it ends up being $30.

Edit 2: Any reason to get 3x3 antenna vs 2x2 and lose the camera?

I dunno about 3x3 but as an average Joe, 2x2 is darn good enough for me.

I picked up the X230 off the outlet deal, pretty much identical specs but with IPS. Couple things:
The 3x3 antenna is useful only if you upgrade or plan to upgrade to cellular data plan, otherwise, you got a spare wire for nothing and no camera. You can upgrade to msata SSD but only at Sata II speeds. SSD is 7mm in the main drive. Ram should be stock 1.5V single sodimm, and you can use either 1.35 or 1.5V memory for the other slot. Backlit keyboard has painted on keys and is IMHO much better feel than the non-backlit keyboard which uses stickers for lettering (like all previous lenovos) but the sticker around the lettering on the x230 is for whatever reason, especially noticeable. Webcam is upgradeable via fleabay $20 kit fro the x220 and all x230 have the camera cutout and tiny connector inside the screen (no need to remove any screws to install if you wish).

I stupidly selected the 3x3 without realising it would replace the webcam. Just emailed them to try to get the webcam back. Hope it works

Good reminder - apparently most SSDs out there are 9mm. I guess that Intel 330 180GB I just ordered might not fit...

1280x800 is a lower resolution than 1366x768

u can get $40 discount for non backlit keyboard. i don't look at my keyboard when typing.
