Will you be able to own the modem after the 12 months or do you have to give it back?

My rate (internet 15Mbps) got jerked up from 29.99 to 47.99 (and just a couple of months ago I was paying 19.99$ under different promotion). Nobody was telling me or giving me a new modem to bump the speed till I called them. Threatening to cancel my service and mentioning promotion from AT&T for 29.99 (12 month contract) gave me an offer 39.99$ rate with the new modem and bump-up speed (now default anyway). So I cancelled my service. Now I don't know what is better to reapply under different name or switch and try AT&T.

![]() So of course I call in to CS and was told they could do nothing, I get transfered to Retention after mentioning that I may go to ATT. The CS in retention didn't care that I was canceling, and was like "okay, your service will be disconnected this Friday." He didn't even care that I said I was canceling. Some "retention" department. Charter and every other ISP knows they have us all by the balls, and that sooner or later we will be back. We def need some govt. regulation to fix this problem.

SIgh, Charter is getting on my nerves. I am on chat with a few questions for the rep and they take forever to respond. All he wanted was my ssn to run a credit check to get the "adequate" prices for me..
It would have been nice to just get a few questions answered with some decent courtesy. |

I'm all for getting a good deal, but it's pretty pathetic the lack of common sense that some people have about companies who need to make a return on their investment. Too many dirtbags in the US think everything should be "free". Free healthcare, free education, free everything... no one is saying you should pay an exorbitant rate, but your comment is pretty ignorant. |

I despise Charter. Two years ago they made me so mad I got rid of cable and went OTA. Probably one of the best decisions I ever made. But I just moved into a new house. My only choices were to sign up again with AT&T DSL at 6mbps at a price of $45 a month or get Charter at 30mbps for $29.99 for the first year. I'm sad to say I made another deal with the devil. I am extremely happy about the speeds and the modem is DOCSIS 3.0. I'm hoping that by only having internet with them I won't have too many problems. No way in hell would I ever sign up for cable again with them.

I gave up on charter 2? years ago... got tired of random outages which occurred way too frequently... And to top it off for the 5 years i was with them the 4 years i just had internet every January somehow ( they dont know who how or why) i would end up disconnected at the pole.. and could take up to a week for em to fix... luckily im in an area with 2 cable companies so been with Knology ? for past 2 years... can have a few burps in stream each week but very few outages so far.. and yet to be disconnected at pole..

Same story, same response from their "retention" department. "New customers, only."
So I asked, "How long do I have to be with another service before I'm considered a 'new' customer?" Response: 30 days. So here's me in a week, going without YouTube, Wikipedia, Netflix, Pandora or Slickdeals for a month...
