I just got this, seemed like a good deal...returning LD blu ray reader that I bought for 40$ 2 days ago. Should have waited for this deal...

I was about to grab two for my home server where I rip all my blu rays till I saw it only reads at 8X compared to my other Asus BD-ROM drives which read at 12X. Any idea why these are so much slower at 8X read compared to 12X on the non burner such as BC-12B1ST?

Yep...also, the relative ease of making regular backups. I have a backup HDD (ie a standard 3.5" that I install, back things up, and remove), I have a WD Passport for daily backups, and I have optical storage for weekly or monthly backups. Then I store my HDD and my optical files offsite, so in case my house burns down or someone steals my desktop, I'm not sunk. Wouldn't do me much good to have a backup drive if some burglar just steals my desktop AND the backup drive sitting right on top of the case.

You might as well just buy another hard drive. BDXL is so ridiculously expensive I can't see anyone buying that media and taking themselves seriously. Even most aren't going to use BD50's since they are 3 to 5 times more expensive than BD25's.

Even easier, just use them at the grocery store or Target type store. So there's no need to walk in and talk to the guy in the gas place. Most places I shop at automatically check and charge the maximum on the card. The exception is Walmart where I need to tell them how much to charge to each card.
