I have lost low 2 digitals GBs of files before, and I was kicking myself. I can't imagine losing hundreds of GBs just because I got it for cheap.

not a lot of negative reviews related to DOA or dying drives. seems more an issue of compatibility with operating systems.

if you are planning on tearing it out, it might be ok but of course the warranty is void.

the days of 5-year warranties and reliable hard drives are long gone. consolidation in yet another space not looking good for the consumer.

I dunno, I was on the fence about this because I am looking for 3TB anyway. If this is 3TB I'd grab one, but for now I"ll wait a little.

'zilla kin, sounds like the drives pretty decent (for 5400 rpm drives). Problems are with the interface (USB3-sata) and OS incompatibility from what others have said. If you really only want to pull out the drive, most of the negative reviews probably don't apply.

Thanks for the help. It's always nice to hear from another 'zilla. My friend has a couple of the 7k300 drives and says they are pretty good. I just can't decide if I 'really' need this yet. I was hoping that the usb3 would be good on this but it doesnt seem to be the case. I was thinking of putting this hdd in a desktop and pulling an old 500gb WD from its case and upgrading into to this.

It's a good thing this went live way before the reg public is awake otherwise I wouldnt have all this thinking time. I kinda wanna get the mouse and KB too but don't wanna spend all my money just yet. Decisions, decisions

Nice deal, got 3! I hope this is better than the WD My Book, recently lost 4TB of data with that piece a crap drive. I'm sticking with 2TB drives, 4TB GPT formatted drive was impossible to recover.

most, if not all, the bad reviews are attributed to the enclosure, not the hdd itself, and user incompetency.

my hitachi usb 2.0 hdd, which i took out of its enclosure and put inside the computer, is still going strong.

Yeah when I started buying 2TB+ hard drives I decided to buy an extra one to mirror/sync/backup the first drive. That much data is too much of a risk to lose unless it's something I have on DVD's or Blu-Ray. Haven't had any failures yet, but the extra peace of mind is worth it. I use hard drive SATA racks and SATA docks to keep the backups offline until I need them.

I got 8 to build a RAID system using rewards dollars I had saved up. I hope it works out ok for this purpose.

Anyone have any thoughts? My knowledge of RAIDs is pretty limited at this point.

originally was looking to purchase this item. but i got seagate 3TB backup plus from amazon few days ago for $99. Don't think the sale value will hold for over 100. Will pass on this one. Good deal for anyone needs it.

Is the drive inside 7200 RPM or 5400?

the bigger the hdd the more data you will lose if it crashes.

at this price you can buy extras for backup.

Western Digital bought Hitachi Global Storage Technologies about a year ago, renaming it to HGST (since they can't use the Hitachi name). So, these are probably some unknown mix of Hitachi and Western Digital technologies.

The only drives that have ever completely and abruptly failed on me (clunk-clunk-clunk, goodbye data) were Western Digital, so I avoid them. So, I'm not thrilled with the HGST situation. Since you're a Western Digital fan, you should be happy.
