hitachi is good for HDDs, but too many bad reviews here, even if they are mostly regarding the enclosure, still enough to stay away.

OK.... Lot's of folks on this thread don't understand some things about the Hitatchi drives. Value Detector is going to set you straight here. I'm a major computer geek and have been for 30 years. I was building my own machines back in the 286 days. Yeah, just after vacuum tubes went out of style. I've built or repaired about 100 machines and am a mechanical engineer in my day job.

Quality levels on hard drives vary and change every few years. I've had drives fail by every major brand in the past. I used to hate Seagates and love Maxtors and Western Digitals back in the 90's. Then Seagates got better and Western Digitals had some problems. In modern times, my favorite drives for long term reliability have been Hitatchi 7200 and 5400 rpm drives and Samsung F3 and F4 7200 and 5400 rpm drives over modern Seagates and modern Western Digitals. I have a number of 2 and 3 TB Hitatchi, Samsung, WD and Seagates of modern vintage in 7200 and 5400 rpm. (I torrent alot and love music !) The deal with externals is that some drives get HOT inside a poorly ventilated case. Seagate externals are the worst for this. Their 2 and 3 TB 7200 rpm externals could fry eggs on them. I took my 3 TB seagate 7200 external out of its case and use it that way now. When they run this hot for long, long term life suffers and they will not last many years. But with proper cooling, they are just FINE and fast. The Hitatchi 7200 rpm are also HOT but not as hot as the Seagates are. If the case ventilation is not great, you can take it out of the case and put them in a new fan cooled case or internal to a machine and they are just awesome drives. All the 5400 rpm drives by all of thesse manufacturers run relatively COOL and should all do just fine even in a non ventilated external case. The Samsung F3 and F4 are very FAST even at 5400 rpm and nearly as quick as the 7200 rpm Seagate or Hitatchi, with the benefit of running very very cool. WD 2 and 3 TB external drives have PROBLEMS now because the idiots just used a solder connection for the USB connection to the board inside and they come loose over time and fail. Search on this topic. I won't buy another WD external drive until they fix this simple screw up going forward. If you do, plan on pulling it out of its case and putting it in a new enclosure or internal. I also won't use a Seagate in it's own external case due to overheating problems, but will use them inside machines. I like the NewEgg Rosewill fan powered external cases the best right now to put drives in. My faves are any Hitatchi and any Samsung. Problem is both companies are now owned by WD and Seagate respectively. The Samsungs are now made in China but I understand the design is still the Samsung F3/F4 at this point so these are still great drives to buy. The Hitatchis similarly are still Hitatchis. Longer term the above may change, but for now I think still 100% the case. Buy these as fast as you still can and happy turkey day too !
