I too can't do in-ear but with cheap decent cans there is no turning back IMO. The 201 is quiet and under powered when using phone/mp3/ipod as source. Also, depends on head size (big heads lend towards 201/428 over the 202/203)but the 202/203 is more efficient for this application and destroy the 201 in the bass department. I got my 202s for this price and refurb 203s for 9.99. The long cord does kinda suck for this application but 201s have long cord as well. A simple twist tie has made due stuffing extra in pocket. I don't leave the house without two sets of cans!
I may have spoken too soon about the 201s regarding ipods, since I never use ipods. I was referring to my experience with them on my laptop---sorry about that. And yes, the cord is 10 ft long and is attached to both sides, so that has to be taken into consideration if you're mobile. However, they are great on your laptop and are plenty loud enough to get lots of volume, with clean sound, albeit light on bass. Again, super comfy and light.
I bought the 202s a few years ago and found the bass to be muddy and the phones to be extremely uncomfortable (even painful) for even short time usage, even though I don't have a large head. It was an easy decision to return them. I paid about $28 for them in 2008.
