I found these speakers selling for a low price at a closeout store. I read the reviews before buying and thought "how bad can they be?" -- many people seemed happy with them.

Pros:
The cabinets look nice. Speaker sound quality is equivalent to others in this price range that I've heard, which is to say very lacking in bass (I doubt it's possible for a cheap 3" speaker in a small cabinet to reproduce bass very well). Sound quality through headphones is much better, so presumably the amplifier is reasonably good.

Cons:
Perhaps having an internal power supply sounded like a good idea at the time, but putting the transformer inside the cabinet, very close to the speaker, is a major design flaw. What were they thinking? As noted by other reviewers, this design causes a noticeable hum in all but the noisiest environments. I suspect that's the reason why other equivalent systems use external power.

I "fixed" the hum problem by moving the transformer to the outside of the cabinet. It doesn't look very elegant, and I have to be careful because the exposed transformer gets hot, but at least it solved the hum problem.

Also, as other reviewers have pointed out, all wires are hardwired and the connection between the two speakers is fairly short (about 3' if I recall). That's OK for me but could be a problem in a different setup.

Conclusion:
Eagle Tech should be ashamed to be selling such a flawed product, and of the hyperbole on the box ("This is what highend sounds like!"; "Smooth response over broad frequency so you hear the music at exactly the same way it was recorded" -- I don't think so!).

Except for the hum I would have rated these speakers four stars.
