Any thoughts on whether an SSD would make a substantial difference in overall system speed for a desktop like this? I know an SSD is highly desired in a *laptop* and makes a huge difference re: boot times, but I keep my system up pretty much 24/7, so I'm unsure if it's worth either buying an SSD and shoehorning it into the above nicely-priced system, or biting the bullet and purchasing a $1000+ Dell unit that has an SSD as an option.

An SSD drive will improve performance, esp. startup time of any system. That said, imo they are not worth the extra cost generally unless you are really concerned with the startup time and can't live with a couple of minutes to startup the system. Imo, you are better off just buying whatever PC you think works for you and is cost effective. You can always add an SSD later as the prices will only come down with time. That said, most people use SSDs as their boot drives and do not factor in that with Windows, Windows updates and various other updates like flash, firefox, java, etc, it does not take long to chew up 200+ GBs on your system drive. So some small 128 GB SSD drive is not going to have a long usefull life before you end up trying to find a way to move things around\it causes some hassles. You really need to get a 500 GB SSD to do it right, and that will cost almost as much as this Desktop right now so again, unless you really really need it, I would just wait it out esp on a desktop which is left on most of the time. |
