I've run LR 3.x (haven't tried 4.x) on an Acer netbook with an AMD C-60 x64 processor and it ran fine. this is considered a low power processor, so in most cases you'll be fine, even if LR 4 requires a little more horse power.

You probably need to start over, but I'd try it. Sometimes the installer is smart enough to detect a prior install. Knowing Adobe though, it won't be smart enough.

You might even be able to run them side by side if you want, but I'm not sure.

I'm not sure what type of files you plan on editing (or what that netbook guy was editing) but I was running LR4 on my old system with intel C2D 2.4ghz, 5400rpm hdd, and 3gb ram and it was such a pain to edit raw files. It was certainly doable, but far from optimal and took so long.

It'd be: move a slider, wait a couple sec to see results, adjust it a little more, wait another couple sec for it to update, whoops moved it too much, slide it back, more waiting, etc... then next slider... then next photo, which itself would take a bit to load x however many you shot. sure there was the option to copy edits from one, then apply to the rest, but sometimes that wasn't practical to do to get the best final outcome.

this summer I made the jump to i5 3750k, SSD, and 16gb of ram (not sure which component contributes more), and editing is now fast and I feel now at liberty to tweak at will to get my final outcome! btw, I was using LR3 before this, and I felt that LR4 ran more efficient on the same hardware

I used the netbook while traveling, and after shooting, I edited RAW and 60-120mb PSD files using PS CS5 right along side of LR 3.x. I rarely if ever complained about performance because when you're on the road for weeks/months at a time, it was the perfect machine.

Oh well, the point was that even on a low end netbook with only 4GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM disk, it worked. When released, LR 4 had some significant performance problems, but I'm guessing they've been worked out.

I think the poster should try it first, but if I were buying a new PC for this, I would skip the i5 and get an i7 (e.g., 3700 or better), use a 64-bit OS with 16GB of memory at least, a fast video card (check Adobe's support for models) and if LR uses a scratch disk like PS does, then make sure you have two disks, one for the OS/program and one for scratch. SSDs of course, will be faster than rotational media.

as I said, doable but far from optimal. I have a lower tolerance of slowness I suppose... even worst now that I have a proper editing machine, I could never go back to editing on my old system unless it was only for a couple shots
