Sony MDR-V6 Monitor Series Headphones [amazon.com]

Lowest price I have seen for these headphones. Usually around the $60-70 mark.

Received mine today. Really nice. Definitely 'flat' if you play it on the computer unless you have a nice sound card. Need more to drive it. Sounds good on my iPhone. The low (bass) does come alive. All I need I now is a nice hi-fi system. I really missed my Marantz.

Alright.

My Review of these headphones: I am not impressed when I compare these to my Sony MDR-V600's. I like bass that doesn't sound like it's being bloated/clipped - The bass sensation on these headphones doesn't seem as good as my MDR-V600's. The best way to describe it is bass that sounds like it's being delivered outside the scope of what the headphones can handle.

These headphones I received from Amazon are made in Thailand. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

So far I've tried the Sony XB700's (They were way too much bass, especially in the 100 to 300Hz range, totally distorted the sound and I had to EQ to reduce the 100Hz range completely in order to get the sound I was looking for).

I've also tried the Monoprice 8320 In ear headphones with the cover the hole with tape trick to compress the sound - These sounded amazing and I was royally shocked for what you get for $10 with these.

Overall, I'm not sure if I got a bad batch, or if the quality control of the MDR-V6 has remained the same over the last 15 years (I doubt they can make them exactly the same and expect each headphone to sound exactly the same after so many years), but I took a risk.

Clarity wise, however, I would say that the MDR-V6 appears to be a notch better than the V600's. But for the type of music I listen to, Techno, Rap, bass line heavy tracks, dance music, they don't feel the same as my V600's.

EDIT to ABOVE:

- I figured out 75% of the problem: The headphones are not pressing hard enough on my ears. When I squeeze both headphones in slightly, the low bass distortion goes away.

Anyone else have this issue?

Weird. When I play a 40Hz test tone thru these headphones, if I even have my hands slightly on the outside of the headphones, they compress the sound enough so that the bass ends up being played correctly. Am I the only one who see's this?

Pressing on the cups for me makes very little difference in bass quality or quantity. I find the headphones to be quite detailed and handles bass with authority. I am really happy with them. I listen to a lot of electronic ala Kraftwerk. You may have more experience and know what to look for but the low end is supposed to be one of the V6s strong points. Let burn in for a while or exchange for another one.
