It's displaying the $124.99 price that someone else just posted about for the 16GB. And it's showing that for both the Individual and Family plan options. I'm on a Family Plan, so that's the one I would have to choose...but trying to figure out how this would work. Also, that last time I spoke to someone at a Verizon store they told me that if I upgrade my phone that it would change the ENTIRE family plan such that my dad (who also has a Droid right now, like me) would lose his unlimited data and the costs for the basic phones for my mom & grandmother would increase to Verizon's $30/ea for a basic phone (with mine & my dad's changing to the $40/ea) and the whole plan for everyone would switch over to the shared 2GB data plan (for $60/mo). Is there any way to prevent this to happen if just I want to upgrade my phone? I don't want to screw the entire plan by my needing to upgrade a phone. As my dad would make me pay any increased costs above what he's paying now. |

I was just thinking about if I should sign up for the $75 upgrade and wait until January to get the phone. I guess that's a moot point now. Sigh. It seems that AT&T, Sprint and T-mobile offered great deals on the S3 more widespread than Verizon. Maybe something will come along before Christmas. |

The other deals I know of: 1) $1 from Sam's Club ... but requires that you have a Sam's Club nearby, that you have a paid membership, and that the store has inventory. Deal may be dead. 2) $50 from Staples ... but requires that you have a Staples that sells cell phones (only around 10-15 states, do). 3) $130 from Wal*Mart with a $100 gift card. However, this requires that you regularly shop at Walmart to make the deal work ... otherwise you have $100 tied up in a store that you don't shop at. Options 1 and 2 were nonstarters for me. Only option 3 worked ... and worked well, as we do our grocery shopping at Walmart. That made it a $30 phone options for us. But, that brings us to your other point:
Two solutions: 1) If you have a basic phone that is eligible for an upgrade, you can upgrade that phone to a smartphone. However, you keep that basic phone on the basic phone number. Then, you activate your new GS3 against your smartphone phone number. That keeps everything on your existing plan. No changes. I've had two Verizon reps offer this solution to me when I called ... ironically, they seem to want to help customers keep their unlimited data plans. 2) Switch your phone from $29.99 unlimited data to a 2GB data plan for $30. Keep the rest of your Friends & Family Plan the same. That's not shared, but 2GB for each phone. So, it's a wash and you didn't change from $10 basic to $30 basic. Now, just upgrade your existing smartphone to the GS3. You did, however, go from unlimited to 2GB. Verizon lets you look at your historic data usage, and any verizon rep can look it up for you, too. I was using ~0.6 GB/month. Why you'd even think about doing this option is explained below ... Problems: 1) Walmart can't do this, though I suppose it could be YMMV. It's too complicated for them ... they need to tie the new phone to the number immediately. They have to select a data package from a list of alternatives ... and unlimited doesn't show up anymore. So, they can't upgrade smartphone to GS3, because your phone's data plan isn't current. If they use the basic phone number as the upgrade path, then they'll want to again point the phone to the data package -- either requiring that basic phone to upgrade to a data package or, again, requiring you to switch to share everything. It seems that the Walmart system isn't nimble enough to pull it off. Verizon can do this for you, but not Walmart. So, it kills the deal, as Verizon is charging the full MSRP for the phone. 2) Walmart can do this one. Barely. The 2GB plan allows them to select something that is current. It still took 1.5 hours and 3 (yes, 3) separate calls to Verizon technical support to pull off the feat. Just did this Saturday night. So, as with all things in life, it comes down to time versus money. Will you spend the ridiculous amount of time required to save the $170 on the new phone ($30 at Walmart vs. $200 at Verizon) while not incurring higher plan rates? Good luck. |

Target (via targetmobilestore.com) has the S3 for Verizon for $99 (new w/2 year plan) or $149 (upgrade with 2 year plan) - but comes with a $50 target gift card, so you could say it's $49 and $99 - and they seem to be in stock. I'm tempted to go for this.
The are charging a $30 upgrade fee, is that normal? -- nix that .. no $30 fee, not sure where I saw that. |

As for the unlimited data, I am also losing it. Practically speaking, I think it is dead for all of us going forward although some methods to prolong it have been supposedly successful the last 6 months. Just a fact of life I guess.
I see that Amazon changed the price. I pulled the trigger yesterday on the blue 16gb for $74.99 upgrade. It shows $124.99 for me now.. I just logged into Amazon and it still says ship date of 1-9-13 so I've got at least another month to try to find a better deal (and cancel this) but at least I've got this deal in my back pocket. Thanks for all the updates and alternatives, guys... the Amazon is still the best deal for me but I'm hoping something else comes along still. |

I wonder if something better will come along, I see Target still has the phone for $99 (after the $50 gift card and w/2 plan), so I'm tempted to go for it. Free evall period and return shipping for 14 days (you have to call in that period, you have 21 days to return it). Free FedEx 2 day shipping, so I guess I could have the phone in hand by the end of this week .. very tempting. |
