Three users submitted this same deal at the same time. Mods/Admins need to merge.
So, I tried clicking through the rebate instructions to go to the actual rebate form, and it just spits me out to the homepage for the rebate company. Do I have to wait until midnight PST for the rebate form to appear on their website? Or is this a dud? |
|
You have to wait until ~2AM PST/5AM EST for the other site, but it'll be there. |

You were correct, sir. Checked at 4:30AM EST and the rebate was still missing. Checked back again at 5:34AM and the rebate is live! |

Not sure if a refurbished unit is entitled to the 30-day latest map guarantee, but lots of complaints on the web out there that if you update the maps it will brick the unit unless you delete the extra voices before doing the update, otherwise you are stuck with maps from before 2009

The internal flash in this model is EXTREMELY slow as well. The TomTom desktop app needs to scan and index all the items stored on the GPS, and it takes about 15 minutes to scan. I cannot imagine how long it will take to actually write to it. At least it's more responsive than a 2010 Garmin that I had. I'll see if I can run a free update through their TomTom Map Guarantee program. I'll have to register the GPS first to see if it qualifies. |

90 days to download latest maps
This refurbished unit DOES qualify for the "TomTom Latest Map Guarantee". The unit came with maps from 2010 (look in the device settings for the map release date). However, if you follow the following steps, you can activate and download the latest maps for free (for 90 days from day of activation):
However, I did not allow it to update my GPS unit yet. I just want to see if I still need to delete files off of it before going through with the update. I'll post back here if successful. The update is listed at 1.5GB in size... Last edited by okinawanmatt; 11-29-2012 at 03:08 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

Took a chance and ran the update. It's been frozen on uploading "cline.dat" file for an hour. When I searched online, a moderator on the TomTom forum suggested that the GPS had run out of space, so I needed to back it up, reformat it and clear it out, then add the GPS app and the newest maps back to it. Reformatting a TomTom GPS to Start Fresh
So I finally found TomTom's official article on reformatting the device. Before the reformat, it would take about 15 minutes for my computer and the TomTom Home program to index and open the GPS. The GPS had about 20MB free space left on it when it was shipped to me from TigerDirect. The GPS would also take about 20 minutes just to delete a file (such as a voice file). The GPS itself seemed to function fine, but it just struggled when interacting with a computer. I found this unacceptable.TomTom states that it's ok to reformat the entire GPS and use TomTom Home to re-install the operating system. This worked. However, Windows errored out after an hour every time I tried to reformat through My Computer or Device Manager. I finally used a low-level format tool, which had no problem. Running a chkdsk showed that the internal storage on the GPS had no issues or errors, so I'm fairly certain my device will be just fine. After the format, I had to do another format in Windows to create a Fat32 partition, at which point Windows recognized it as if it were a USB thumb drive. Afterwards, when I opened the TomTom Home desktop program, it immediately recognized that I had a GPS device and it needed to install the operating system back onto it. The OS is only about 28MB in size, and installed rather quickly. Afterwards, TomTom ran another update that installed voices and updated to a newer version of the OS. It did not install the default map, but I had already downloaded the September 2012 version of North American maps as part of the "Latest Map Guarantee", and TomTom Home already recognized that my device was already activated through that guarantee program. I then clicked on "Manage My Device" in TomTom Home, then pointed it to the latest map that had been downloaded. It transferred it to my GPS, and my GPS now has 200MB of free space. The GPS seems to be working fine - very quick boot up, finds satellites within a few seconds, voice and navigation works. I've only used it once, so I'll come back and leave my impression if something goes wrong. This sequence of posts exist to help anyone else who my buy a TomTom refurbished device. Since Google indexes these forums, this will be the most up-to-date how-to/experience with current (working) links about resetting a TomTom device. The only two links needed are as follows: Official TomTom guide for reformatting and resetting a device: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/...a_id/12412 Low-level format tool for HDD, SD, Flash: http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-L...rmat-Tool/ Hope this post helps someone in the future! |
