I don't think they ever had free returns for anything, except certain clothes items that specifically say that on the product page. Maybe people thought the returns were free since they just printed a shipping label and didn't see it deduct anything, but amazon's policy was always to deduct a pre-set shipping cost from the refund for return shipping if it was not due to their error.

I actually just did this this past weekend. Of course, the kit I bought (3M 39008 Headlight Lens Restoration System) wasn't eligible for the rebate.

Anyway, here's my results:

I used this 3M Kit on my 2001 Chrysler T&C van. It took a long time, I really wanted it to look good and did each step a bit longer than suggested. The effort paid off. The lenses are as clear as new. Look almost perfect.
I think I spent nearly 2 1/2 hours start to finish (masking off the paint, using the product, clean up, etc,).
Well worth it since replacements are $100's and the dealer was asking $100/per lens for a restore. A good drill, this kit, a few beers, and a few hours get you very good results.
