Does the Movie Tie-In change the original book or is it pretty much the just the cover changed and released around the release of the film?

^I would like to know that as well. Aesthetically speaking, I prefer the original cover.

Which "original" cover? The book has gone through dozens of printings (hundreds if counting foreign editions), with nearly as many covers, in the 75 years since it first came out. The main text of this one will be no different from any of the other recent editions. It might have a new introduction or extra material that mentions the movies, but the stry itself will be The Hobbit.

For anyone who's never read this, be aware that it's really more of a children's book (age 12ish) than the rest of the LotR. That's not to say that it's not good, just that it's a much simpler and basic story than what came after. Most people should be able to read it in an afternoon or two.

An afternoon or two?! There's no way it'll go that quickly for any non-speed-readers... and despite being a simpler story line, it's still a great read for adults. Read it before the movie comes out! Repped.

I read through the book in about 8 hours, so an afternoon or two is entirely feasible.

Speed readers would likely finish this in a single afternoon. There's really no reason the average adult should NOT be able to read this in two, maybe 3, solid afternoons. Unless you're taking your time to familiarize yourself with characters, look up stuff in the index, etc, I wouldn't let too many people know if you can't read it in about 10 hours. The audiobook (which is often read at a slower-than-average speed) is only 11 hours. Of course, if you're considering an afternoon to only be an hour or two, your comment makes more sense.

Yes. The Tolkien estate hired Stephanie Meyer to 'punch up' the story a little.She tweaked a couple chapters and some glittery vamps.
