I PM'd a couple of mods, but none of them responded. We also haven't heard back from Kevin - who said he was going to try and find out too.
When I saw it had been deleted, my first thought was that maybe the deal was some sort of scam, and the thread was deleted because SD found that out...but even if that was the case (and I don't think it is, since it's been working fine for me since I signed up last week) it should've been left up with a mod warning or something.

I should've written down all the handy things that people posted on it, but oh well...

In any case, I posted my experienced with the service here on the new thread: http://slickdeals.net/f/5915440-StillGoing-urlhasbeenblocked-2048MB-RAM-50GB-Disk-2TB-Bandwidth-2x-IP-address-40-year-4-Location-Choices?v=1

I am fairly positive that it's not a scam. While they aren't a 'top tier' VPS provider with a long history, they have been around for a bit. Sure, this could be a way for them to bring in a ton of cash before closing up shop, but there would be no way for SD to know about that.

Odds are one of three things happened:
1) SD reviewed the logs, including IP addresses of posters, and saw something fishy going on (ie: self promotion) and simply deleted the thread.
2) SD did not review the logs, or if they did, they didn't find anything, but still thought something fishy was going on and deleted the thread.
3) Something else happened to make them delete the thread.

But failure to pay an advertising fee is certainly not the cause.

It helps to make sense out of all of this Smilie

Looks like it was about 2 hours in between tests

If I don't figure out anything by tomorrow I may ask and see if I can get moved to another server and see if that helps

As for the thread getting deleted the only things I can think of would be either something fishy or it was too big to clean up all the arguing and someone felt it would be easier to delete it Frown

How long between tests?

A lot can happen, especially on a shared host, that can impact speed. Not to mention every router/link between you and the various places you are testing to.

While a problematic nameserver certainly can have an impact in your usability of the Internet, the repercussions would be tied to long delays in web pages loading since most have cross-site links spanning dozens (or more) of hostnames - each one requiring an individual lookup. But when you download a file in a speed test, outside of the initial query, which could take a while, once it has the IP and begins the download, it doesn't have to look anything else up. So the differences in your results and your NS change is nothing more than a coincidence.

I would wager to bet that it is likely related to either congestion on your node or CVPS's connectivity - which changed between your tests.

I'd just really like to know who deleted it and why.

I PM'd a couple of mods, but none of them responded. We also haven't heard back from Kevin - who said he was going to try and find out too.

Arguing? Hah. That thread was nothing compared to some of the month+ long super threads SD has had over the years. AFAIK, I don't think anyone even got mod alerted once in there, as nothing was really out of hand. A little bickering doesn't piss the mods off. Something else had to spark their interest.

I did change my nameservers which seemed to have made a little difference
But still only getting 200-300k when I download from the server Frown
Since your DL speeds look pretty good, have you tried a traceroute (tracert on windows) to see if there are any hops with abnormally high latency?

Here's a partial traceroute (source and destination removed):

I do notice that there's about 25 ms of latency between my VPS and the 2nd to last hop, which seems pretty bad to me...

Looks like I may have found something
The Cogentco router's at hop 10 through hop 12 seems to be where I am having an issue
pinging it gets me anywhere from 10ms to 300+ms

but even with that the route looks to be a mess and sends me all over the place Frown

Will look and see if I can find the test ip's that were posted before and check them

update
found the test ip's
Strange how I get better response to Chicago and Atlanta which are ~1000 miles away than Buffalo which is less than 400 miles away is worse

it depends on the routing. There might be a direct route to LA that is why you are getting better ping times.

Then why was urlhasbeenblocked employess even on SD answering questions? All anyone had to do was Google whatever, right? Lucky thing the thread got deleted then, so urlhasbeenblocked could quit wasting their time!
There's a difference between providing customer service when asked and creating an entire forum to answer customer concerns. I'm sure providing support on a $40 VPS plan for every single distro they offer is not this man's full-time job.

I read what the other guy was trying to say. I love how all the snobs come out of the woodwork to say that if you need instructions to install x, then a VPS isn't for you. I'm sure they were born spouting sed queries, and had to dumb down to learn english.
Purchasing a VPS plan with no knowledge of how to manipulate it is essentially the same as someone with no woodworking experience buying a saw mill and then asking the internet how to use it. If you want to encourage that kind of behavior go for it, but that doesn't mean the company selling the product has to, ESPECIALLY when the VPS plan is at such a low price.

Quote from SlickFerret View Post :
And I never said that urlhasbeenblocked had to provide instructions for every single OS. Geesus. People just like to insert crap to someone's post so they can try and win arguments.
You said they should have a forum for questions. That was your "advice". If you can't understand the difference between the guy answering some questions in a single thread here as opposed to setting up an entire forum on his site to answer questions from all his customers, most of which are probably using different distros, then I don't know what to tell you. It's a $40 VPS plan. Your "advice" makes little sense and you came off as pompous.

if it is 200k to 300k range, contact them. there might be a torrent dude on your server eating up the bandwidth.

also you can setup an apache server and get people to download via http whihc will be much easier for you to setup

I would second the htttp suggestion for testing. Or at least try something other than ftp.

here's a test file from my server:

I was making a A to B suggestion to someone about their service. So just C your way out of it. Suggesting having a forum for people to post info on, what is that any concern of yours? Why don't you let him answer if it's a good idea or not. He was the one working his ass off for days, only to have it all get deleted.

Geesus, comparing a $3 a month VPS to someone buying a saw mill ("essentially the same"). Really? And you want to be taken seriously?

And bringing up the "every single distro" crap again to try and win a lost argument, when I never said any such thing. How are you sure what the guys full time job is, anyway? You know him personally?

Pompous? Gee wiz, Beav! Sure am sorry I offended you! I got attacked for making a suggestion to a vendor I purchased something from in this forum, because he doesn't have one of his own. But if I offend you, lordy, please forgive me! </sarcasm>
