Are you running your own nameservers to get the name working instead of the ip?

Coming from dedicated hosting and used there nameservers so not sure the process
I get about 2.0 MB/s from my server, for what it's worth. It doesn't quite max out my connection (I have 30/5 Mbps cable).

As for the name, I'm actually just using a free dns provider for that name (http://freedns.afraid.org/).

urlhasbeenblocked also offers DNS hosting; I just didn't have a domain to host there. If you do own a domain, you can point it to urlhasbeenblocked's servers and set it up from there. That's what the DNS tab in the VPS control panel is for.

You know, all this talk about needing to consolidate information somewhere... I might try to pull the useful tidbits from these threads and put them into a wiki (I have a VPS, might as well use it for something like that, right? Smilie ).

Getting 200-300k still Frown

My cable line is 60/10 Mbps

The traceroutes still don't make any sense to me though
works fine from the server to the router closest to me but going from me to the server has some weird high latency

I wonder if that could be causing my issue

Just tried your file again as I wanted to double check before I asked to be moved to another Buffalo server and now I am getting 200-300k on your file Frown

Maybe a change to Chicago might be a good idea

Not sure if it makes you feel any better, but I see the same thing. And then like 1 min later it's fine.

In either case, moving around in Buffalo isn't likely to help, though you'll probably want to try to do some speed tests at the different data centers at different times of the day before deciding where to go (not even sure they'll move you just because it's intermittently slow).

FYI - when dealing with traceroutes, always take middle-hop latency with a grain of salt. If the subsequent hops do not show ongoing high latency, that isn't an issue with the router or route, it's more likely to be just a delay in the router responding directly to you.

Notice how hop 9 and 13 are always 41-51ms? Even though 10-12 are >200ms at times? This isn't a problem, and is actually quite common.

In case people don't understand how traceroutes work, here is a brief primer:

Part of the TCP/IP protocol stack is a packet field called TTL or Time To Live. This is designed to prevent endless loops. If a TTL is set to, say, 64, the packet needs to arrive within 64 hops, otherwise it is discarded with a "TTL Expired" response sent by the discarding router. back to the sender Every hop (router) along the way decrements the TTL it receives by 1. While this was designed as a safety mechanism, it also gave us the ability to do a traceroute. When you do one, your system uses the ICMP protocol (like ping) to send a packet to the destination IP. It starts out with a TTL of 1. When the first hop gets it and decrements to 0, it responds back with a TTL expired message, and traceroute says "aha! that's the first hop". Then it sends another with a TTL of 2, the first hop sends it to the second, and the TTL goes down to 0, and so on.

Sometimes the path subsequent packets traverse changes in the middle of a traceroute due to routing changes and you might see weird responses or extra hops, which could (though doesn't inherently) indicate a routing issue.

However, keep in mind that routers have a primary responsibility to route packets. That is Job # 1. So when a packet goes from A to C, B will prioritize sending it on. On high end routers, this is all done at the circuit layer and requires very little intervention from the router or it's CPU. But handling TTL expired responses does require the router to process the packet at a higher level. As such, if it's handling a high workload, that response might be delayed, resulting in higher response times. Some network engineers (depending on the hardware) will set policies further lowering the priority given to responses, which is why you might see a consistently high response time from one or more hops.

But the key thing to look at is the subsequent hops. As long as the latency goes back to normal, you know that it is "routing" traffic at an acceptable speed. If, on the other hand, the latency only continued to rise, that would certainly indicate a problem.

Since you're so adamant about helping people who have never used a VPS in their lives how about you create a wiki or something else productive instead of telling people how to run their business and trolling SD forums?

Just look at services that Google gives away. Have you ever tried to get support from them for GMail (that isn't the Business version)? It's impossible. But they also provide forums to allow users to help eachother on their products.

It would be trivial for any company, especially a tech-saavy VPS provider, to setup some type of forum to accomplish this. Not only would it be practically free, but it would allow them to build a knowledgebase for their customers and make it easier for n00bish users to use their services. And that, in the end, means more long-term happy customers, which means recurring revenue.

fwiw -- I know where you can pick up a decent $40 VPS for something like this. There's some debate about the best avenue for support, but hey, what do you expect from a $40 VPS?? Should be good enough for a wiki or basic forum. Let me know if you want a link.. Cool

I'm glad you wrote that all out -- i was thinking the same thing needed to be addressed here, but I didn't really want to type it all out!


I have found tcptraceroute to suffer a bit less of the single hop delays showing up, so I use it in conjunction with traceroute to verify results (iirc tcptraceroute gets through with less of these stalls because the tcp packets are getting priority by looking more important to the various routers than a regular traceroute packet normally appears).
