We have an Aldi coming! Whee
When they showed up in SoCal, there was some online harassment of Aldi. Negative reviews where the comments clearly show the person never set foot in an Aldi. Armchair negging from someone who never bothered to visit one.

Then, I tried to use Google Maps to go to an Aldi. But someone had falsely reported to Google that the Aldi location had closed.

Fast forward a couple of months- things have settled down. Aldi is doing pretty well.

Probably people from the competition who have had to close stores while Aldi is opening them. Whenever I am on the East Coast, I shop at Aldi. I am happy they are opening here in SoCal. The rest of the stores are going to have to get it together since they are all already in crisis. The location that the Aldi is opening in used to be a Ralph's.

I've been in the Aldi in Inglewood. Other than eggs, which were 99 cents a dozen for large eggs when I was there, I didn't think much of their prices or quality of produce (and lack of selection). I looked at their spices, which were cheap, but some were made in China. I refuse to ever buy food made in that country. Meat prices, they do have USDA Choice, were higher than Ralphs. They don't accept coupons and most of us know how to get a better deal with coupons. After one trip to an Aldi, on a weekday afternoon about 4 pm when they had few customers with even fewer items in their baskets and just one checkout line open, I can see they are bound to fail here. There is just too much competition - many with superior quality, selection and prices - in California for them to survive. I was excited that they were coming but after going through their store VERY disappointed. I will never go back again.

Yeah, its a different model for sure. Aldi uses private label products a lot, and I've found that they're pretty good. Their version of cheetos is not quite right, but close. I actually like their version of oreos better. The Aldis I've been to seem to have enough traffic and interest to make it.

I'm hoping the Albertsons purchase of Safeway / Pavilions / Vons doesn't ruin SPV. It seems like the ads are starting to be similar in style, product, and promotions so I guess SPV is getting assimiliated into the borg. Meh, I liked SPV as it was and will probably go there a lot less.

And then for Ralphs, three locations along my commute have permanently closed.

Finally, there is apparently a possible grocery strike for SoCal [pasadenastarnews.com]. I'm not an economist, but it seemed like the last one didn't accomplish or resolve anything. If one happens again, it'd probably be a repeat of last time- people start shopping elsewhere, get used to it, and never return. There are so many choices.

Vons sales have increased a lot so customers must be happy to shop there

Don't worry. There will be no strike. Both sides have too much to lose. It's all bluster.

Since the July 4th ad, Vons and Pavilions in Southern California have separate ads. So far, I have seen no difference other than the logos in the ads. We'll see if that changes.
What I do like at Vons/Pavilions since Albertsons took over is the meat discount sticker coupons and the buy 4 or more get $1 off each item sales (the red tagged items). I wish Vons and Pavilions would install bakery discount racks as Albertsons does (like Ralphs has).

I was just in Las Vegas for 10 days. Things have radically changed in Las Vegas. Vons in Vegas is now controlled by the Safeway/Albertsons division in Phoenix. Totally different ad, some products changed as they no longer get their deliveries from the SoCal warehouse. They also have a combined Big Book of Savings for Vons/Safeway/Albertsons.

See's

See's says today is national lollypop day, so they're giving a free lollypop to everyone who stops in today.

FWIW, you can usually get a sees lollypop as your sample if you ask nicely. I don't like chocolate, so I always ask for one instead. But hen, I go to the factory on LaCienega, so maybe the rules are relaxed there.

I HATE the Vons bakery since Albertsons bought it. They have 5-6 day old bakery items they expect me to buy at full price. NEVER! Super insulting to see something packed on 7/15 selling for full price on 7/20.(muffins, strudel, rolls) Mad
Turnover used to be much better. I used to love Vons bakery, now not so much The employees are upset as well. They can't make new until the old sells. Yuck. vomit

That's not the Aldi I know or that has thrived enough to expend westward. And not for nothing, you were in Inglewood. I am sure that they will show themselves to be the store I know soon enough.

Southern California will be their failure. This area already has many discount stores better and more entrenched than them (the 99 Cents Only and Food 4 Less in the shopping center adjacent to this store were extremely busy vs. Aldi). They are nothing special. And I do mean nothing. Inglewood means nothing in this equation. It's the same store and most of their initial openings are in ethnic areas.

The biggest joke is the mix of merchandise they added for California stores including hardware and backyard items. High priced, too.

Ribeyes are $5.77 a pound this week at Stater Bros., and there's a $2 ibotta (with 8 oz. or larger, shouldn't be that hard at Stater)

Technically, manufacturer or store coupons are not allowed on items at Ralphs that have been tagged with their own clearance UPC...but some cashiers don't know the rules...
Same goes for wine that has the clearance UPC's and even if you buy 6, they are not allowed to give an additional 30% off.
Ralphs

I finally found wine on clearance to try, bought 6 clearance wine today and the 30% came off. I was a little worried because it didn't come off after he scanned the 6th bottle, but it came off at the end.

Also found bolthouse 1915 with clearance tags for $1.99, had hang tags on them for $1/1. Coupons didn't scan, but were manually entered by cashier.

A few days ago I got clearance OJ, and an eq came off, so those are still working too.

I hope my stores never get the register update.

Ralphs

Did Ralphs call a strike?

Went to one store this morning and got an organic cauliflower clearanced to $1, by the time I drove to another store they were setting up a picket line.

Went to Food4less instead, didn't find anything there. Organic produce was overpriced and looked it, not fresh. They need to at least lower the prices to what they are at TJ down the street!

Negotiations Update | Thursday, July 21, 2016
Your Union attended bargaining sessions on July 20 and 21 fully prepared to bargain a mutually acceptable contract. Albertsons/Vons and Ralphs did not share this intention and their proposals continue to fail to recognize your hard work, the companies' profitability and the increasing cost of living in Southern California.
This is not acceptable. We are beginning boycott actions throughout Southern California on Monday, July 25th. These will continue through August 8th - our deadline for obtaining an acceptable offer or calling for a strike. Please check with your Union Representative or steward, or our web site at ufcw770.org/actions for dates and times of boycott actions. Your participation will make a difference since the customers know you and will honor your request.
Negotiations will resume on August 1, 2016. Meetings for all members have been scheduled for August 8th to vote to accept or reject management's offer. Watch your mail for a meeting notice with locations and times.
The next 2 weeks are critical and your support and solidarity make the difference. We don't want to strike but we will if we have to. You deserve better.
