The hardware specs are similar to the Surface RT.

This is a good option as well--however, the Vivo Tab is *Windows RT* and thus has zero compatability with legacy Windows apps other than Office. The Acer in this deal runs Full Windows 8.

but the small (32Gb) harddisk size worries me. I don't intend to install any games or huge softwares other than the normal Office and streaming music application so I don't need a full-fledged harddisk...

From other reviews of the 64Gb versions, about 20Gb is for the hidden recovery partition and left an out-of-the-box 30Gb, which means about 14Gb of Window installation. since this version does not have the recovery partition, 14Gb will be for window installation and the remaining ~18Gb is free?

Is that sufficient for all the win8 caching and other technical stuff that windows require hard disk space?

should be enough, I don't think windows uses much for caching. you can get a sd card and mount it so windows see it as another hard drive.

Nope, Microsoft only includes Office 13 with the RT version which is its main selling point.

Nope, only Windows RT (i.e. ARM-based Win8 tablet) comes with Office. And that's because you aren't allowed to install any desktop apps on ARM, so they just stick it into the OS for you.

The 32-bit OS itself isn't 14gb. (I have a reasonably clean one installed right now on a desktop, and "My Programs" + Windows" folders add to 7.5 gb. Total space used on drive is ~10gb.) So my guess is there's some crapware on it. Should be able to strip it down to to ~10gb if you know how to clean install it. (And if not, can probably get a gb or so back with just plain uninstalling apps with Windows itself.) So yea, more enough enough space for those "technical stuff".

Remaining space on the SSD I plan to only use for Win8 apps (i.e. tablet-designed apps bought from win8 store). Since win8 apps have to store in OS drive, as far as I know. Most apps are <100 mb, so the remaining 20gb or so should be plenty realistically just for Win8 apps.

Like someone else said, I plan to get a SD card to give it some extra storage space and put movies, install desktop apps like Office, etc. onto the SD card.

My friend has W500, he upgraded to Windows 8 Pro, installed Office 2010 (Excel, Word, Outlook, Publisher, One Note, no Access and the rest of other apps from Office 2010 Pro) and about 5 more tiny apps (less than 100MB each, I believe) and he has only 1G left! Some of the good games from their apps store is more than 500MB. So 32G is not enough for me unless all I want is just Office 2010 and barely a few small games like my friend!

Actually, not quite. 1st atom is single-core. This is essentially same atom, but dual core. So, double the speed if multi-threaded (or more than 1 app running at same time.)

And the integrated graphics is completely different from your 1st gen atom netbook. Should be much faster. (Still not good enough to play a real desktop game, but those tablet games should be fine.)

Microsoft Store screwed me over on the XPS and gave me a $50 dollar credit as an "apology". There's nothing I want on that site, so if anybody wants the code for something on their site, let me know.
