There are some of us that can tether wirelessly with our phones. Plus spending $30+ a month for data, which can equate to nearly $400 a year, is not something most would eagerly venture into.

1GB Ram is plenty. I'm guessing it has less overhead since its a tablet, and not a phone. Also, it doesn't have any built-in add on apps like Samsung or others would have, which eat up space. This is Google's stock OS.

Actually, Im curious about this too. I own an iPad Mini but I share it with my daughter because it has so many exclusive kids apps for her, so I picked up a Nexus 7 and am trying to figure out where it fits in my life. So far this is what I came up with.

Nexus 7
+ Better hardware. Fast, GPS, NFC, Better Screen. Better price (even without a deal).
- Limited Apps. (Unfortunately many really are just big phone apps rather than customized for tablet)
- Support. My first Nexus7 arrived dead. It worked once, static screened then gone. Google support was pretty sub-par and Asus was useless.

iPad
+ Easier to use and lots of Tablet optimized apps.
+ Airplay. Wireless mirroring or sending video files to AppleTV is an amazing feature
- Expensive. For me, it's worth it but I can see why others cringe at Apple pricing
- Owning one makes people on SD irrationally angry

Kindle
+Amazon Prime users.

I was debating between Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD and overpaying for another iPad Mini the one I chose is the Nexus 7. It seems to be the most versatile and future proof choice in todays offerings so hopefully this works out for me.

Sears had it for $179.99 - discovercard cashback of 5-10% yesterday.

It's over now. I picked up the 32gb one for $224.99 * 1.06tax = $239.49 - 10%cashback = $215.55 which I thought was a decent deal.

What I love about B&M stores is that if I don't open before Christmas it's easier and cheaper to return when (not if) I find a better deal! Big reason I shy away from Amazon when it comes to picking up stuff like TV's, computers etc.

Where are all the 8gb and 16gb refurbs? The return rate on the Nexus 7 was enormous due to some early quality control issues. I would have expected to see the refurbished units land on eBay via a reputable 3rd party vendor by now.

Seriously. I picked up a 32GB at the Sears deal but what I'd rally prefer is to get the same discounts but for the 16GB version. I know it sounds silly, but when you don't actually "need" something then mentally it's easier to justify something under $200.

8GB should be plenty for a 8yo. She's not going to fit a ton of movies on there but she could squeeze a few. 16 will give her more room though.

Not sure where the $179.99 comes from but if you used ShopDiscover to link to sears.com you will get 10% CB and then another 5% CB for their quarterly bonus. Their bonuses stack.

So most likely, $224.99*1.06=$238.48-15%CB=~$203.91

So even better than you thought. Just keep an eye out for an email from Discover for the ShopDiscover and then check your statement for the quarterly bonus.

edit: Or does picking up at the store not count as an online purchase?

No surpise. After the last special and this one they have sold over 3000. Being on backorder tells me there probably won't be any more deals soon.
