Microsoft Windows 8 OEM Full - $70 +FS

What makes it garbage? Win 8 runs basically the same as Win 7 except the UI is slightly different. The negative comments about Win 8 have been things like "I'm not using a tablet so Win 8 is useless" or "I don't have a touch screen monitor, nor do I want one" and these comments come from people who haven't really tried/used the OS. This thread is about the Win 8 OEM Full (NOT upgrade). Win 7 OEM Full is currently $115. That's $45 (64%) more than $70 Win 8. If not Win 8, do you recommend that people spend $45 more and get Win 7? Why would you spend more on an older version? I'm guessing that Microsoft is doing this because Win 7 is so popular than Win 8 and so they are trying to sway people to the new UI, while raking in the dough from people overpaying for Win 7.

I'm getting my SSD on Wednesday so I can finally install it and see for myself, but aside from that Windows 8 tile page, the desktop looks pretty much the same, and they removed the start menu, but they just moved it to the bottom right corner which actually organizes your programs a lot more intuitively than the Start menu that we've been so accustomed to. Windows 7 is so great because... why? It just works. I can understand if people had legitimate things to criticize Win 8, such as crashing, or causing errors, but Win 8 seems to be smooth as Win 7. I played with Win 8 for about 15-20 minutes at Fry's before making my purchase, and some of it requires getting used to, but from what I can see, it seems a bit more advanced than Win 7 with useful features, and I like it.

Anyways, to each their own..

Yea, if I had Win 7, I don't think I'd upgrade to Win 8 because Win 7 can do everything I need it to. Win 8 will do everything I need it to as well and I would think more since it is a newer OS. For full versions, Win 7 is $45 more than Win 8. I mean, if Microsoft paid you $45 to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 8, I'm sure the majority of people will switch. Given that, I feel that Win 8 is clearly the better choice to purchase if you build a new system.

Anyways, the desktop I'm on now is using Win Vista, and despite all the negative reviews, comments, and criticism of Vista, it's perfectly fine. Yes, I remember when it first came out, it was a mess, and had all sorts of issues, but years later and a few service packs later (all included with the license), Vista works perfectly fine. Microsoft's operating systems are awesome and they continually improve through all the mistakes they've made in the past.

Let's think.... do you know why Windows "8" is just now coming out? Because if it was anything really groundbreaking then Apple would have done it already.

I have Windows 7 / OS X Mountain Lion / iOS / etc... I have tried Windows 8 extensively. There is just no reason to upgrade. Not only is there no reason, 8 literally adds nothing to the experience UNLESS you have something like a Yoga 13 IdeaPad. Windows 8 was designed to compete with tablets and 1-up them by offering the full experience. They give you the tablet / PC experience but it still leaves a lot to be desired IMO.

Also, you clearly haven't used the OS as the start menu is in the bottom left corner not the bottom right. It's still there, its just hidden. The whole thing is just awkward and clunky and the metro theme does nothing for me. Sure, it looks good for about 2 minutes but functionality wise its just horrible.

I'm not just bitching for no reason. Let me give you a real world example: System Restore:

7: Click once, hover a few times, click System Restore, BAM.

Now...
8: Right click on Start, Control Panel, Security, blah blah blah. Can't exactly remember but I know it is a TAB within a series of TABS. It's not just a simple link anymore.

Keep in mind that on 8, this is completely hidden as well and to even find it most will have to Google.

I don't want an operating system that aims to be intuitive and is COMPLETELY the opposite.

Again, if you are on a regular desktop/laptop (no touch), there is no reason to, and in fact you shouldn't, "upgrade".

Really disappointed with the naming as well. This is Windows "Metro", not "8".

on top of it looking like it was designed for a 10 year old to use.. I'll never understand who thought it was a good idea.

Thanks for taking the time to actually list some actual reasons.

I agree that there's no reason to upgrade to Win 8 from Win 7, but if you're starting with no OS (building a new computer with hardware that has no operating system), Win 8, or metro as you prefer to call it, is a better choice since it's $45 less.

In terms of navigating around the OS and finding features like System Restore, I understand your frustration of it not being where it used to be, but I don't mind learning a new setup. After googling enough times on how to find/do everything on the new OS, those inconveniences will go away. I thought that you can find most things using the search feature on the bottom right corner, or maybe create a shortcut? but maybe not. As I stated, I haven't used the OS yet, and so my opinions of this OS are not well-founded.

So yea, I like Windows 7. I never said Win 8 is better. If they were the same price, I'd most likely get Win 7, but given that it's $45 more, it's just not a better option for me.

Microsoft has gotten to the point where they can make an OS without many crashes, bugs, and performance issues, and even if there are issues, MS eventually fixes them. Even the arguably worst, Windows Vista, became stable and smooth after years of service packs and updates. All those fixes and advancements is what makes Win 7 better and those advancements are incorporated into Win 8 as well. To be honest, aside from a few features, and looking a bit more modern in the UI, Win 7 runs similarly to Vista on 90%+ of things and almost 99% of everyday usage.

Anyways, thanks for your input, I'm saving $45 and going with Win 8.
