These are good headphones, but really not appreciably better than the HD600s or HD580s, especially if you upgrade the headphone cable on the 580s/600s with the cable for the 650s (available from Sennheiser for about $20).

Unless you have money to burn, look for a discounted pair of 580s or 600s (580s used to be available for as little as $130-150, although those have dried up...can still find discounted HD600s I believe).

I'm curious of your opinions, especially on the HD650 vs HD600 if you've had can directly compare. I have the HD600 (never heard the 650) and I'm curious if it's better. I've read some people say the 650 has more bass (which I don't really care for) and actually a few reports of some that prefer the 600 over the 650.

I'm coming from the AKG K701/702 that broke on me (one side cut out just after warranty ) and when I got the 600 they didn't thrill me as much. I miss the huge soundstage, and also maybe perhaps the 600 is more neutral?

For those who didn't get the SennheiserUSA $310 deal on the 650's, the 598's have been ~$150 at Newegg a few times over the past few months (once as a straight discount, the other time as $70 off plus $30 Newegg gift card). Worth setting a price alert.

I have HD580s and HD600s, and I had a pair of HD650s, on loan from a friend, for about a month. (He brought them over and then forgot them).

I personally think the HD600s (with upgraded HD650 cable) are better. They are, to my ears, more neutral. The HD650s do sound a bit different. But I am entirely convinced that, at least for my taste, they do not sound better. I'd call the HD650s a little more aggressive. Bass definitely sounds a bit goosed, and I would say that the same is probably true, at least a little bit with the midrange.

The HD650s sound good. But in a rapid A/B with the HD600s, I will take the HD600s.

The HD580s, incidentally, sound pretty much IDENTICAL to the HD600s.

Great, thanks for the reply. I always have that lingering feeling that maybe I went with the wrong model. I haven't upgraded the cable--I'm still a little skeptical if I'd actually notice a difference. Where did you get yours from, direct from Sennheiser?

I also haven't burned my HD600 in that much, probably still under 50 hours so far.

Yeah, I got my cable directly from Sennheiser, and it was well under $20. Did it make a big difference? Probably not. I am always a bit wary of snake oil (or green marker). But it is a nicer cable, and for the modest amount of money, I went for it.
