The delivery guy will move it within reason. It's listed as "curbside" but I believe it mostly to prevent someone from requesting to move it 3 flights of stairs. They do it with a Pallet Jack and it takes like 10-15 minutes.
I tipped the guy 20 to move it to the right spot, though he didn't seem like he was expecting requesting it. |

![]() Mine is about 950# empty. Also, on any safe with a removable door, do yourself a favor and take it off and set it aside. Not only will you get better hand holds, but you'll take off about 300#. Also, check with local tool rental places and ask if they have a "safe dolly." It's basically a very robust moving dolly and is designed for a heavy load and the one I used has a tilt-back feature that shifted the weight so that it was very controllable. For what it's worth, this is a very good option for an RSC at this price point. External hinges are preferred for much wider door opening and like I mentioned above, door removal (although I don't see in the description that it is removable; it probably is). The 4-sided locking bolts are also a good feature. I couldn't find the steel thickness in the specs, but most safes in this range are 12 gauge or 11 gauge steel. Only thing I don't like about this one is the electronic lock. One other thing to mention: take the time to plan out where you are going to put this and make sure you take the time to anchor it to the floor so it can't be easily tipped. Good post OP, repped. Protip: Remove the door, it just lifts straight off the hinges. Then use a heavy duty 2 wheel hand cart to move the door and a 4 wheel dolly to move the safe. It was pretty easy to get down a hill and around back into a walkout basement with 3 people. I bought one a couple years ago when it was on sale for $899 at Costco (this is a good price now though as I haven't seen it on sale since) and it's a good safe, 11g steel, reinforced offset lock plate, yada yada, plus it's nice looking which is a bonus if your wife is picky. If you would rather have the dial than the electronic lock call Rhino and they will switch it for you before it ships (at least they would when I bought mine). No one should expect a safe to stop all theives but it does act as a good deterent to your average break and grabs, bolt it to the concrete floor and it's safe from most.

As for the door thickness, I just quoted from the specs on the Costco site. Agreed, the 5.5 thickness is just fluff. It depends entirely on how it is constructed. For example, is there and extra steel plate in the door? If yes, how thick and how much of the door is covered? Rhino Safes makes these. At this price point, this is a solid unit if one accepts the EL. Last edited by Lawdog; 11-27-2012 at 09:41 AM.. |

This is a great deal on a decent safe. It is actually a very good deal at full price. I wish it was not made in China but I could say that about most everything we buy these days. If you don’t have a safe and don’t want to spend well over 2k this is probably perfect for the vast majority of us. I would probably go with the manual lock, as I have known of some of the electronic ones having trouble but you are still covered by Costco’s warranty.
I have a very nice Browning Safe. I love it but am simply out of room. It would be over $3000 to replace that safe and I just cannot justify the cost for a second safe. I too have seen the videos they show at gun shows where two or three guys break into a cheap safe in a matter of minutes. What they almost always show are guys who show up with the right tools and knock the safe over in a big room so they have plenty of room to work on it from the top. As pointed out earlier, a professional thief may be able to get into one of these but most often it some crack head that breaks into your house to get what he can find quickly. You should always bolt these to the floor and place the door fairly close to a wall where it is hard to get a pry bar on it. Don’t put your safe in your garage next to your torch set. Don’t laugh I know a guy who did just that. They never did get in but basically destroyed his safe. For me this is a great second safe and a good primary one for most of us. It is not the most fire proof one but pretty good. If you are like me, and live in a newer house, I do not think there is enough wood to get a really hot fire going anyway. Now if your average gun is a couple of grand or you have a couple of hundred thousand in gold and silver coins, waiting of society to fail, well then you might want a little nicer safe. |
