The software retail value is $25 but has recently been as low as $12.50. Too bad you can't seem to choose from different titles. So you're getting the LeapPad for about $40 which is about as low as I've seen it.

Any thoughts on why the Leappad is better than a cheap Android tablet (that can download free apps and a lot of good cheap ones)?

It's not. A tablet will last way longer for your child because eventually they will to age where they'll realize the Leap Pad is for little kids and they'll want something cooler. Plus, apps for a tablet are way cheaper that having to buy Leap Pad games.
