That said, if I had to buy another set Id probably look long and hard at the Milwaukee stuff, just because they've developed their "system" a lot better than Ridgid has in regards to additional tools (go on RidgidForum.com and search for cordless grinder to see a lot of angst from Ridgid users)

I'd love to buy this deal but my old 19.2V Craftsman drill is still going strong with it's original batteries from 2004. And I use it a lot.

If you have to ask this, you probably don't need such a high end tool. Isn't that always what happens at Slickdeals though?

These are great for the professional carpenter and the like who know what they need and will abuse them daily.

I'm trying to figure out what's the best deal. both come with a drill/driver. dcd785 and dcd980. I'm trying to figure out if the difference is big, from 1.5 vs 3.0 and etc. not everyone is a carpenter like you.

I just ordered the $100 kit, with the 2 18v nicd batteries and drill/driver. I'm a new homeowner, going to be doing handy work for...ever. Would you recommend getting into Li-ion batteries if I have NO other tools yet? Any opinions?

NiCD's just don't last, even if you don't use them. They won't hold their charge. Do you have anything against a corded drill. My corded drill is far more powerful than every cordless I've had access to using. That said, it only gets used when I need brute force.

I'd prefer something cordless, I wouldnt even mind having one in the charger at all times. I just keep hearing all these 'studies'/''myths'/'opinions' that li-ion sucks for this kind of equipment (regarding shelf lives, etc)... but I'm digging the 20V/12V combo.

Is this the direction dewalt is going in? I dont want to have to upgrade to li-ion in 2 years, you know?

I like my Li-ions. They have a better shelf life than Ni CDs. My Ryobi's have not been the best as they had a bad batch of the older big batteries, but I believe they've figured out their issues.

NiCDs are known to pack more of a punch, but their self discharge rate has not been improved over the years and is far to high for my liking.
