Yes and no. WD makes better portable ext. hd's. Seagate makes more reliable ext. desktop hd's. This is through testing of portable WD 500GB, 1TB, 2TB portables, multiples of each as well as the same (minus 2TB) for Seagate. Then the same for desktop hd's. WD desktop hd's get very hot, time after time.

Have WD drives ever locked up due to a firmware error, requiring you to send your drive (with EVERYTHING ON IT) back to the manufacturer?

honestly its a hit or miss.. cant rely on any drive being 100%. ive had some seagates be good as workhorses. others like wd green drives, break down and get errors, same with hitachi etc.. all i can say is trust no damn drive and buy multiples like a slick hoarder. power in numbers and not all but the 5 drives can go bad. data replication.... lastly i wouldnt pay no $80 for this. Hell no!

Yes, and it's just "one" of the reasons that I recommend Seagate desktop drives over the WD desktop drives. The Seagate desktop drives don't get super hot - well, "as hot" as the WD's - they get warm.

However, I "do" recommend WD Portable drives. Those are a different creature. And I recommend them over the Seagate portables to boot. (no pun intended)

And to answer the other poster that replied to me, no, I've never returned a drive to WD as I work with drives - well, I used to. Semi-retired now so I still have all the toys.

yes...used $10 off $40 office max and office depot coupons i had

$80 for 1 tb is high priced. Wait some time it will come around $70. A week back during thanks giving it was selling for $69.

Had really bad experience with Seagate portable external hard driver, which went down after two weeks of use. Had to pay extra 10 bucks to return it and got a refurb one.
WD portable is much better. However, $80 is just regular price in holiday (amazon has same price for long time in Thanksgiving holiday, maybe in Christmas again).
$105 for 2tb WD my passport was really great deal. Or do price match at staples and pay with $25 off coupon if you could score one.

I purchased the 500gb seagate after my wd 750gb passport failed on me. regardless of the company i am now backing it up everywhere.
