They're good for backing up hard disk images (using software like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost) on systems w/o Blu-ray writers. You could back up those images to an external hd, but those backups can get pretty big especially if you do them frequently.

Another good thing they're for is burning factory system recovery DVDs.
