As a warning, the books you borrow from your prime account will only be readable on kindles. You can't read them on (for example) kindle app for ipad / iphone / anywhere you can't borrow them. I found this pretty inconvenient (I like amazon's auto-syncing feature when I read on my kindle, on my ipad at night, or on my iPhone while standing in line).
Also, I have an extra one of these that's basically new - I had it for a while (worked great in India when my cell didn't for emergency email), got a new lowest-end kindle cheap (slickdeals), love the lighter weight, and have apple iDevices for the extra functionality of this one. My 3G keyboard developed a splotch, I asked amazon customer service - now I've got a NIB replacement one. Any idea where I sell it to someone who realizes the value of unlimited international cell modem? I feel like I need to find a lonely planet sale board or something. Only amazon seems to understand what this model commits them to (and that's why it's priced so high on their website, even though it's years old and they must have whole warehouses full of them). BTW - for form factor, this has a nice, grippy back, compared to the plasticy back of the kindle 4. |

We went on a cruise and took this with us.The fact that you can access the web free all over the world is priceless. We were getting reception in the middle of the caribbean (sometimes). Also used it in Europe. Having said that, the web browser sucks and it is very painful to browse. This is clearly for emergencies or if you are overseas and going through internet withdrawal. Some sites don't work at all. I was able to read my favorite gadget sites and check email, mostly through their mobile sites.

"This is the best reason why to get a Kindle 3G! The Kindle 3G allows you to web browse for FREE using 3G pretty much anywhere in the world! Although the web browser is very basic, and you can’t watch videos on an e-ink screen anyway, it allows you to do some very basic web browsing! If you’re lost somewhere in the city, you can google your current location in your Kindle. If you just want to check your email if you’re in a really remote area you can do that too. For the month I was in Salvador, Brazil I had a friend that for some reason didn’t have access to the internet for several days. He asked to borrow my Kindle and he checked his email right in class. His mom had written saying that she was about to call the cops reporting that he had gone missing! " Also: LAME! I guess Amazon is limiting the free 3G to 50mb a month I guess it is understandable, since they have to pay for it, but I was just about to start travelling and using this feature

But there aren't many. Additionally, I was worried what kind of shape the batteries would be in. I googled the part number and found several replacements available on Ebay for about $10 including shipping. |
