Thread Details

This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

I drink a fair amount of single malt scotch, and finally got around to trying the Kirkland. If this was truly 20-year-old Macallan, $46 would be a steal, but the Kirkland is nothing special. It's not bad, but the flavor is nowhere near as complex as a high quality 20-year-old single malt. It's more comparable to a Balvenie Doublewood 12, but even the Balvenie has more depth of flavor. For a similar price at a discount store, you can get a Glenlivet 18, Glenfiddich 15 Solera, or Oban 14, all of which are superior malts. If you were to try all four of those and then take a sip of the Kirkland, it would come in a distant fourth place. Heck, a bottle of Glenlivet 12 at $28 from Costco would be a tight contest. The Kirkland is not bad but it is also not anything approaching a great bargain.

Yeah, since just an 18 year-old goes for about $150 a bottle

There is a similar bottle at Sam's club for $76 - 19 year Glen Taite. I am curious as to the quality and taste. I know that independent bottlings sometimes produce great product that may even be superior to the original distillery. Just not sure how much time goes into the mixing of the malts and quality of the final product.

Anyone have any feedback or remarks on the quality of the Macallan bottlings from Alexander Murray?

Picked up 2 bottles of both 20 minutes ago.

Since both bottles are distributed by the ubiquitous Alexander Murray & Co, regardless of what any CostCo wine guys says, if the 20 year was Distilled at Macallan, it would say so just as the 15 year does. But for $45, how bad a deal can it be.

Just came back from Kirkland, WA Costco, and they easily have 200 bottles on the floor.

Bought one because of the hype here. Cost $59.99. Thanks to WA outregeous tax, comes out to be around $78.

Cracked it open and tried it.... Its allright I guess. I am not a scotch drinker so I dont have anything to benchmark it againts. Definitely can taste the Oak. Smells nice Smilie

That's WA for you, thanks to the distributors who have a duopoly.

My liquor cabinet is full of CA purchased bottles thanks to flying back to cali often and you can bring back up to 5L of liquor at a time (2x1.75L and 2x0.75L)

The 20 year old KS scotch showed up in the Danvers Costco - they were out of it during the holidays so I was surprised to see it there this past weekend. They only have a few boxes on the shelf.

The Kirkland Rum is pretty good. I haven't tried the Whisky yet, thought the $28 Glenlivet 12 would be good enough and it was pretty good.

No liquor in the one north of Baltimore, I go to the one in DE in Christiana, which rules, but I have yet to see this Scotch there.
