This years edition of Costco KS private label single malt is available in some stores in MA. Price $44.99 per 750ml bottle. It is aged 20 years and sherry cask finished. Seems like a great deal for the age for fellow SDers. If you've tried it, please share some tasting notes here.
  • Costco Item Number 650728
  • You usually don't need Costco membership if you are only buying liquor. At least where I am, no surcharge either, you pay the same as us members.
  • Due to state liquor regulations etc, some Costco liquor stores are operated by independent liquor/wine shops that may/can not carry Costco KS private label products
  • Call your stores ahead to verify availability if in doubt

Macallan was shown as the distillery in last year's version but the price was about twice as much. This year they might have gotten this from a different Speyside source.

Cheers.

How do you let the whole bottle breathe? I don't suppose you leave the bottle open for "couple of days"? Thx.
From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decanter Stick Out Tongue

"Other beverages, such as cognac or single malt Scotch whisky, are often stored and served in decanters, which generally have a stopper. A few expensive cognacs and malt whiskies are sold in fancy decanters."

with all the property and regular sales taxes we pay in CA I could buy a whole lotta $70 bottles of booze! laugh out loud

They keep our liquor cheap so we can tolerate the other taxes!

haha so true, liquor in CA better be cheap after state income tax...WA does not have state income tax..so the price is effectively the same Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

are these speysides sherry like macallan? or mild in flavor like the glenlivet? i'm personally not a fan of the intense sherry of macallan...

Blame your state legislature not costco. Your state imposes a 17% hidden fee on the retailer right off the bat as well as a fee on the distributer. That fee alone is higher than Costco's typical profit margin it charges on goods. Add onto that the fact that the 17% is not based per sale but based by what the state assumes the sales will be so there is a fixed amount due to the state each year. It means retailers are forced to jack up their prices extremely high to ensure they make enough to cover the fee to the state. This is all before the outrageous gouging of the 20.5% distilled liquor tax and the $3. something per liter bottle tax. It forces people to go across state lines for liquor which exacerbates the problem but you can thank your government for the insanely high prices and taxes.

For those in MA: Avon yesterday had couple of cases left. Waltham sold out in 2 days. Not sure about Danvers.

No. These are aged in oak barrels and finished in sherry (meaning short term, not overwhelming flavor). Speysides are known for not being peaty. Not sure why you mention this.

No, finished in sherry. Again, this is similar to a Glenlivet or Balvenie.
